900ss Ie Cans Wanted

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by Speedy23, Jul 5, 2021.

  1. Looking for something a little less restrictive than stock, but not too keen on buying new.

Anybody got a pair in halfway decent nick that they would like to sell? Not too fussed about brand - all usual contenders considered.

    Thanks

  2. It's a tricky one - the standard cans are a bit bulky and quiet, but alternatives seem rather expensive new, when considering the age and value of the bike. An exception is perhaps the Viper brand, but I don't know anything about them. I'm lucky enough to have some Ducati Performance cans on mine (made by Remus) but I am not planning to part with them; they are quite loud. Looking at pricing on eBay it does appear that the original silencers are pretty cheap 2nd hand, so if it's just a bit more sound that's needed, I wonder whether there's some sort of simple modification that could be done to a pair of those?

Some options require a remap or replacement ECU. There are a pair of titanium DP exhausts on eBay at the moment, but they have some dents and the starting bid is over £200 (but no bidders so far) - there's also the confusion with eBay ads that they don't always make clear whether things are for the earlier carbie models or the ie. Those Titanium units are said to be for "For 750/900 ss and 1000cc version".

  3. Thank you for this - you've identified my dilemma nicely. Don't need/wanna go down the route of anything so extreme as to need remaps, etc...

Silencers on it ATM are branded 'Remus' but I think they are std...purely owing to subdued sound output.

Know this might sound daft, but what is the exact difference between carbie/ie 'zorsts....is it the physical dimensions, flow or what?

    Anyway, thanks for reply.

  4. Hi Speedy,
Carby ones won't fit, and tbh you should be able to find ie ones cheaper.

Or re-core the std ones, it's not difficult at all.

    Good luck

  5. If you are prepared to part with, or retire your Remus cans, as you seem to be, you could drill out the end cap rivets and replace the wadding. Once you see how much wadding is in there, use less/none to repack. Plenty to choose from here:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_...059.m570.l1313&_nkw=silencer+wadding&_sacat=0

Rivet the end back on and see what you think - if you do one can first, you'll be able to judge the change in sound and once happy, you'll know how much to put in the other...

A riveter and a selection of rivets, if you don't already have them in your tool box, are not an expensive outlay.

If you want to then 'tune' the sound louder/quieter, it is only a few rivets to drill out and increase/decrease the amount of wadding. You could also increase the size of of a few holes in the baffle, but I'd be less inclined to go this route as it is irreversible.

You could alternatively still stick with the quality Remus pipework & end caps and buy new 'sleeves' in whatever finish you might prefer - carbon, titanium, brushed aluminium etc.

  6. If on your travels, you come across a reseller of carbon tubes that are "sharkskin" please give me a shout.

I cracked a termi many years ago, and wanted to replace with the correct tube.
Pjengineering have carbon, but it is a smooth finish. Original termis have a rippled surface like "sharkskin".

    Never did find a reseller...

  7. Hi Borgo

Good tip. Have you done this, then? Quite willing to dissect the OE cans if they come apart easily enough and have a play with the wadding. Got my riveter in the shed with a selection of rivets so ready to go. Done that successfully to a pair of HD so-called "Screamin' Eagle" silencers I bought for my FLHS (yes, I know.....not so much "screamin'" more like "fartin'") - the end caps on those were just held in with screws and the baffles came straight out, removed the wadding and replaced baffles - better.

Just as long as it isn't going to turn into one of those "this is a 5 minute job, what could possibly go wrong?" type affairs. As you can probably tell, I may have been there before. :)

Thanks for link to PJ Engineering - they seem to offer a range of possibilities to follow up.

    Cheers

  8. I've successfully done this more than once...easy job. Make sure you use blind rivets(!)
There us also a case for "overpacking" the cans..as this stops the sound and gas movement being absorbed by the matting material.

  9. @Speedy23 Yes, I've repacked my cans a few times on different bikes and always been pleased with the outcome. I haven't swapped tubes, however. Can't see why either job should grow into something particularly challenging. A further option with your Remus cans would be to have the job done professionally by someone like: https://maxtorquecans.com/ducati/ who did a fantastic job on my Morini can that was stainless with a welded end cap

@The Royal Maharaja Hello Grant, Might it be worth dropping PJ Eng a line to ask if they have/can get the different finish you're after?

    This any good? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402602142521?hash=item5dbcf52b39:g:Nw0AAOSwZDdf0~ZJ

  10. Would you happen to know what size rivets are required? Also, if the proper sealed (blind end) rivets not available, would it be possible just to use some high temperature silicone to seal a pop rivet?

  11. I'll dig them out and have a measure. I would definitely source proper blind ones, not worth the hassle when the silicone stops sealing!

  12. Hi Speedy, my terminology is off.. you need a SEALED Closed End Pop Rivets or sealed blind rivets, or sealing rivet...
    My leftovers are 4.8x15.

  13. Excellent. Thank you for kindly taking the time to dig out and measure the rivets. It is much appreciated. :upyeah:

I will have a rummage on the bay for the sealed type rivets. Will update this thread to let everyone know how I get on.

    Cheers
