Ruroc Atlas 2.0 Review

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Nostromo, Aug 1, 2021.

  1. Just a quick review to assist anyone looking at purchasing one.

I was drawn to this helmet by the looks and the integrated audio, I held off for sometime as I could not get the design I wanted(Raw carbon), but last week Ruroc ran a sale that included "blemished" helmets that didn't pass the Cosmetic QC.
I payed £219 for the helmet, £15 for an extended chin curtain, £20 camera mount, £20 pinlock and £120 for the Bluetooth audio.
Anyway I have done one commute with the helmet(95 miles on A roads and motorways) and here are my impressions, I will be comparing this to my AGV Pista Gp Mimetica, abit unfair as Rurocs original price was around 400 and the Pista was just over 1k but I have used the AGV almost everyday for the past 5 years.
    Anyway...
1.Quality, the carbon on the helmet is great, even with the few blemishes it looks and feels great, the visor is great and pinlock is amazing but that's where is stops, the plastic infill parts feel very cheap as do the pads inside. the Bluetooth module also feels very cheap and was not as easy to install as stated due to poor fitment on the plastic infills. On the positive side the magnetic clasp is awesome, helmet clipped with one hand and gloves on no problem.

    2. Feel and noise, the helmet feels very open and airy but this leads to a lot of wind noise, the AGV felt more secure and the padding softer and almost molded to your face, where as the Ruroc just holds onto your face, even now when I put on the AGV the 5 year old pads feel nicer than the brand new Ruroc pads. The Ruroc though is very light but not by much(that I can feel). The Ruroc is quite a bit larger and no where near as aero as the AGV and you can feel this at motorway speeds, but that is no surprise as these two helmets have two very different jobs.

3.Bluetooth audio, This sounds ok, but has to be turned up to overcome the wind noise on the motorway. Controls are at the base of the unit at the back of the helmet, and the buttons are small so very hard to use, so its a case of setup and go. The unit only allows for music playback and phone calls. I have also had an issue with intermittent cutting out on my music and half a voice prompt with apple maps(google maps if fine) I have reseated the unit and checked all connections and will see if that rectifies the issue tomorrow, if not I will seek a replacement. The mic is good and the other party can hear you clearly, however the adhesive pad to affix the Velcro mount is terrible and would not hold.

In short, if I had payed full price for this helmet I probably would have sent it back(online only so unless you know someone with one its buy before you try) and ponied up the money for another Pista, but at £219 I got a decent helmet for the money. the 120 for the Bluetooth however is another story...

  2. After your initial post, I searched the internet to see what I could find out about the company and their helmets. Wasn’t too bothered that they are better known for snow sports helmets but when I read on their own web site that the motorcycle helmets only conform to the same minimum safety standard as a helmet marketed for scooter riders, I started to dig a bit deeper. Found that the carbon they use is entry level quality and a recent statement that their helmets have not been submitted for the UK Sharp or the US Snell testing, both of which are more stringent that the ECE 22.6 and US DOT tests so I’m out.
