Multistrada Front Axle Pinch Bolt

  1. I took the bike for a new set of tyres today but they were unable to remove one of the front axle pinch bolts.

    I only bought the bike in February with 5000 miles I’ve taken it to 7500 so assume it’s the third set to go on, you wouldn’t think a mechanic could wreck the bolts so quickly.

    quite a few of the other fasteners seem to be knackered too it’s a one previous owner that was less than three years old from a main dealer.

  2. Not a good sign, overtightened pinch bolts could crack the bottom of the fork legs. IIRC it’s about 12nm torque setting here. You also mentioned other bolts are damaged, did the same servicing dealership also change the tyres?

  3. Mine are fitted from the bottom. In fact I thought only the top half of the clamp was threaded anyway. I am thinking if yours have gone in from teh top, they are not actually clamping anything? UNLESS a rock ape stripped the correct threads and added some additional ones in the wrong end?

I strongly suggest torque values on the most important fastenings are double checked, if the front fork pinch bolts are over tightening the lower fork legs can crack, the rear wheel nut from memory has a torque setting around 230nm, which is very tight, it doesn’t look as though much care has been applied by whoever has been let loose on the bike, but some of the settings are safety critical, so would advise a proper check of all the components that are touched in tyre changes are looked at. It is not normal to have all the bolts rounded off.
     
  5. Depends which forks you have as to which way the screws fit. If the screws go in from the top, removing the front wheel speed sensor helps getting to the inner one on the left fork. If you try with a ball end, or such like, it’ll round. It’s a screw.. try another workshop…

  7. Hi Nelly can you recommend the correct part numbers to replace all the pinch bolts ?

  8. Yours look in terrible condition anyway and they are made from the usual Ducati cheese, so ultimately bound to fail.
    In my experience when having tyres changed, unless you make it abundantly clear to the fitters to take care and to ensure they adopt the correct torque settings and sequence, there is a risk they will not be fitted the right way.
    Mine on an 18 plate 1260 also rounded off internally, even with using good quality tools and they are fitted from the top, not the bottom. In the end I decided to go for higher quality stainless steel bolts from Pro-Bolt and although slightly longer than I actually needed, they are superb quality and ought to stay the required course.
    The others you've referred to in your post, particularly the exhaust casing, are typical of poor handling and awareness when having tyres fitted by a less than knowledgeable tyre dealership. I know, because I've previously experienced this, including a scratched front wheel, due to lack of care when removing the front callipers!

  9. You don’t need a Ducati part as such… M6 x 20mm or 25mm iirc. I use stainless cap heads on customer bikes with a bit anti seize. 9nm torque

  11. S2: I'm not sure, but will try to check later on today and get back to you. Looking at the listing, these don't seem to go beyond the 2012 Multistrada, whereas yours is a 1260 I believe. I'm not sure that makes much, if any difference, however, I'll let you know.
     
  12. The OEM Allen screws on the 1260 go in from above and aren't high quality. Had to clean mine up at the last tyre change as they collect water and corrode. Mine aren't butchered but then I change my own tyres and take care when working on my bike.

  13. Stuey, I've now checked which ones I chose from Pro-Bolt and they are coded TISC635, titanium M6 (1.00mm) x 35mm long. They are slightly longer than the stock items, protruding circa 7mm below the bottom of the threaded lower end, which didn't cause me any concerns, especially being a far higher quality metal.
    Mine have been in the bike for around 14 months and show absolutely no signs of any deterioration whatsoever. Rather expensive, but definitely worth it IMO.
    Good luck with your search and purchase and with fitting them to the bike, but be sure to use the correct torque and sequence!

  16. Cheers Tony they have a 30mm which probably would be a better length and works out cheaper than the pinch bolt set….

    Thanks too Chris Oswestry is only down the road from me so I might look into getting more fasteners from there do you have any idea what pitch/thread type are bolts are?

    it’s a shame there isn’t a bolt size section on this forum
