Is it worth upgrading the wheels on a Monster, for road use ? Looking at the aftermarket alloys that are available and they are pretty expensive - about £2,000 for a set. Is it worth it for a road bike ? Is it going to be more hassle setting up suspension ? Thanks Matt
You need to work out what you want the wheels to do for you & bike. 1) is it the tarts handbag look? Who doesn't love a bit of bling! 2) Better handling(needs definition)? Does your riding require faster left/right transition when navigating the traffic light GP etc 3) Bling. Moar is better (again). Though dont ruin it with a set of touring tyres, extra Kudos awarded for running barely legal race ready proddy tyres SO after all the above is it worth it to you ... PS I'm probably in the bling camp but dont have 2K spons to spluf on a set of wheels that couldnt be better used elsewhere :/
It does all depend on the “why” if the aftermarket wheels are significantly lighter than stock it will definitely improve the bike dynamically, if it’s just for looks then that’s in the eye of the beholder, great bike whichever way you look at it.
£2K will get you some new seconds quality Carbon wheels (with minor cosmetic fault). I switched my Monster wheels for Marchesini. They're slightly lighter but much more bling especially as they turned gold...
If it’s looks, then yes. If it’s “performance”, then spending on the suspension will reap far more benefit.
Lovely looking wheels - unusual colour. Very tempting !. Notice the new SE version of the Roadtec 01 tyres on your bike - they look good as well. Very well sorted overall !! Exactly, thinking it through logically - and here is the problem. The Monster (IMHO) is very well sorted as stock. Even the OE tyres were all right. There is nothing obvious that needs attention - it even sounds good with no need for a new end can. I am not sure whether new wheels would make that much difference for road riding - a lot of money £2,000. Sure it would look nice but would probably get black Dymags anyway (although those OZ wheels look really mice !). But, kind of itching to upgrade it in some way without spoiling a great bike - that is the problem, I could spend a ton of money and actually make it worse. That is useful to know, that it could improve the bike, even as a road bike. Sure for track ridding with higher corner speeds there is no argument, just wasn't sure about the benefits for a road bike - and they are £2,000 for a set. Classic Ducati look with that colour gold, suits the bike. I think that is the choice. Spending money on the wheels is easier - just get them fitted - than changing and setting up new aftermarket front and rear suspension. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. Have to have a little think !
