749 Battery Reading On Dash Flashing

  1. hi all, I'm new to this, had a 748 for years without a single problem, just changed to a 2006 749 and I have an electrical issue.
the battery level reading on my dash flashes all the time and when I'm riding the level slowly keeps going down and I then loose power as the battery runs too low. it doesn't seem like the bike is charging it when riding. I'm guessing it is either the stator or the regulator rectifier that is up the swanny but could really use some advice. cheers Stuart

  2. You need to test the battery for how much charge it’s holding and you need to test how much charge it’s receiving. Then proceed from there, good luck.:upyeah:

  3. cheers for that, I will have a check. it's a new battery and is perfect when it has been plugged into an optimate for the night. but just doesn't seem to be getting a charge from the bike when it's running. just seems like the ice is running off battery power until that runs out

  4. Get a multimeter, set on dc volts and attach the probes to the battery terminals. Read the voltage, should be 12.4v or there abouts with nothing on.

press the starter and keep an eye on the multimeter. should drop to c10.5v until the bike starts, any less and your battery needs replacing.

As soon as the bike starts it should rise to 14v or near enough. Any less, certainly if it is less than 12.5v your reg/rec is on the way out or already dead.

It may very well be it’s the stator thats not putting enough juice into the reg/rec but that’s unlikely. To test it, find the the 3 yellow cables that come from the LH crankcase, follow them to the block connector to the r/r, disconnect the block connector. Set the multimeter to ac volts, touch the probes against any 2 of the 3 terminals (you can test all variants of 2 terminals once the engine is running). Start the engine, the multimeter should read c.25v ac at tickover rising to around 80v at 4krpm - Google for the exact figures. If it does then the stator is ok and fault lies in the r/r.
