Does anyone have any experience of registering an ex race bike for V5 and the requirements for same please? I am keen on an 1098 framed race/track bike with an 1198 engine but no V5. I would like to have a daytime MOT but the frame does not have a number (engine does) Is it possible to register it without frame numbers? I assume kit Cars and the like have the same issue but get round it?
I'm not an expert & I've never done this, but IIRC thats what a "Q" plate is used for - a rebuilt vehicle using parts of more than one other vehicle some of which may not be new. Google registering a Q plate motorcycle and you will begin your journey.
You need a frame number for a MOT AFAIK, mine gets checked on all my bikes every MOT check. I’m sure no chassis number no MOT. @cookster for a definitive answer.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations Remember custom bikes with custom made frames have no number -its all doable. That said DVLA/C are notorious for their inept behaviour so it may be an arduous task.
You need a frame number, otherwise no hope of a V5 or anything else. I would not go the Q plate route, it is for off-road and once designated, you cannot go back to road. I am currently trying to register a track bike that was written off as a N. Ireland registered bike, has a frame number painted on, but no VIN plate. You may also get stuck in the bureaucratic doom loop of you need an MOT to register a bike, but you cannot get an MOT without a V5.
I've seen Q plate vehicles on the road! Here's an RAC link with general info pertaining to cars, but its all the same rules for any vehicle https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/what-are-q-plates-and-can-i-insure-a-q-plate-car/
I would not go the Q plate route, it is for off-road and once designated, you cannot go back to road.
NOPE https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/q-registration-numbers If the bike does end up on a Q plate then DVLA (used to be the local VRO) will issue a 17 digit VIN number that is to be stamped on the bike/vehicle.
Q plate at worse. I had a gixer 750 that was race bike from day one but had vin. It was a 2004 model and about 2015 the owner Registered it so it’s doable. But I think you’ll be down the Q plate route. Good luck!
It’s highly likely that the bike will not qualify for MVSA through age and would have to go on a Q Plate. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/motorcycle-single-vehicle-approval-inspection-manual DVLA do things arse about face and issue the VIN first and require a certificate of stamping from a garage/dealer before issuing a reg number.
Thanks for the info, it seems sensible to assume that it is likely I can register the bike. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if I wasn’t successful in registering it. However, from previous experience of owning track bikes, it is sometimes handy to be able to take it on the road on the odd rare occasion. This is the bike I’m keen on: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/297625362139820/ Anyone recognise it or give me some pointers on what to look out for?
@Nelson not one of your old conversions is it? Multi engine in 1098 chassis (couldn’t remember if you did one) check on isitnicked for free, just need vin no (if there is one under paint)
Yes - one of mine. Looks like it's had a few changes since I sold it/built it. The seller has been in touch re the frame number.
@Kevin Anns I bought a Q plate Bandit with little more than delivery mileage on it that had no frame number. It had started life as a half-faired bike but fell off its stand and the impact snapped off one of the lugs which attach the fairing to the frame. The insurer wrote it off and then sold the bike as scrap (with the frame number ground off), someone bought it off them, removed the fairing, fitted twin spots and indicators and then went through whatever ball-ache hoops they had to with the DVLA to put it back on the road. That was 20 years ago mind, hence the rules may have changed and from what I've read/heard, the DVLA are in a pretty shambolic state at the moment, so dealing with their bureaucracy might be like entering the 7th circle of Hell.
@KA77, Realise this is an old thread but looking to do the same for a blank frame tt bike I'm looking at for track days...how did you get on? Thanks in advance
I went a different route in the end and bought a 1199 track bike. @Jez900ie advice is probably the best starting point ——https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/q-registration-numbers Good luck
