Slight Click from steering

  1. Hi Folks, hoping someone can help with this. I occasionally get an odd feeling from the steering on slow turns like roundabouts, so slight I thought it was just me at first. On checking the steering while stationary I can just hear/feel an occasional click, not every time but often enough. had a mechanic check it and he lifted the front and checked the steering, said the bearing wasn't notchy. I can't see anything external catching on the forks, so what do you think it is. I'm still thinking the bearing just because I can't see anything else, does this sound like a normal symptom? Any help would be appreciated

  2. I think you are on the money Pat - when I have come across a click or noise that's definitely coming from the headset it's been the standard cost-cutting ball bearings/cages that have been the culprit. As you say, no detectable play but enough to cause a noise it's often just that they have become partly dried out or corroded causing the problem. When/if you eventually replace the bearings, roller type are interchangeable and readily available.

  3. Thanks Chris, that confirms my thinking, I'll look into getting some tapered ones fitted.:upyeah:Cheers, Pat

  4. Would agree with the head bearings being past it although it maybe enough to strip it down, clean and grease? but as it's a biggish job, then whilst you're in there you may as well replace them for what they cost, especially if it's got ball bearings.

  5. If it's clicking, then as both above suggest, the bearings are bound to be dry and rusty........in fact if they are like that then knock the b*gger out and replace them for taper rollers...........

...........its easy to do if you have a stand like mine....... (if it will fit an IE)
