wow, thanks for posting. Curious that they didn't put a £ or a $ etc in front of the spent figure - would be good to see a breakdown. Last owner has to be a complete an utter nutter*, or maybe just a typical Sultan from Saudi Arabia*? * not for a minute suggesting that there is any relationship/overlap between the two here.
If you look at jhp’s Facebook pages you will find plenty of pics of the build. Owner is a good chap who just enjoys the building process, he also did a 1299 anniversario rep that Jhp sold a while back.
To me this just shows no matter how lovely this bike probably is, it's just not worth the money doing these projects to a standard bike. £45K build cost! I bet the mileage between the 6 services was only 50 at times lol
IMHO 38 grand loss... Only way that any money would be recovered is back to standard. Carbon is here nor there, big cost will be stuff like pier bon swingarm. Someone may fancy that as bling and be willing to pay, but look how Mary seems to have got stuck with that gorgeous 1*98 carbon swingarm
*cough* ex trioptions racebike refreshed and thrown parts at *cough* there is simply no way it’s done 800 miles.
I will vouch for the mileage and this build, he started building this bike when I was building my 899, it must have spent the first four years of its life at Jhp and as far as I know that swingarm was the first in the uk, I did post about it years ago, same guy purchased a 1299 and purchased every single panel and tank from Ducati to make a anniversairo rep, right down to having Ducati replicate the numbered top yolk but without the actual build number, even put the mag wheels on it, pretty sure it sold with a couple of hundred miles on it.
Agree with this. I’ve currently got a shed load of ££ in my current V4S. Looks gorgeous but it’s still a 2018 V4S. I’d be lucky to get £25k for it despite having ~£40k in it. Damage limitation would entail putting back to standard and selling. And then sell all the bling separately. A right fuck on… Sold the BST swingarm btw. Got strong money for it
The only person gaining out of this is the potential purchaser in as much as he bears none of the cost of the build, yet will enjoy a bike with a comprehensive spec sheet that the asking price will never reflect. Even if it is sold on again in the future, it won't command a great deal if any more. Special Editions, Superleggeras, Supermonos et al, which even though in many cases are lower specced than this example in terms of the quality of the parts fitted to them, will ultimately always be a better investment, but then I feel that's missing the point when it comes to one-offs such as this bike. From the original owner's perspective, few if any such builds are conducted with a return on their money being a consideration. I've been through three builds, admittedly not in this same league, largely because I didnt have to pay someone else to do the work, but anyway you slice it, it's never a financially viable venture. If I had dwelled on that reality for too long, I'd never have bothered.
What I recently realised is that I dearly missed tinkering with bikes. Theyre so goddamned reliable nothing ever goes wrong. Playing with spanners is great fun and was why I prefer lammies over vespas. My lammy always broke down. I had a vespa once and it could run 65mph all day long. Try that on my lammy and you'd be heat siezing in a few hours. Or the exhaust would fall off, or your side panels would eject like torpedos when you braked. Thus Im spannering my 916. My 1299 is for riding, my 916 is for getting my spanner fix. Tinkering and spannering is fun and I wholly understand this excercise, Topsies too. Its like meccanno for grown ups.
Much truth here and I’m not averse to chucking money towards such a folly - I just can’t understand why it’s for sale now having been barely run in. You either throw money at your dream build forever bike or you do something up to flip for profit, this lads failed on both counts
@simmytt, is that Wayne’s bike? Went to see this last year and it is stunning. Top bloke all the same…
Yes its Wayne's bike, i remember you posting about it a while back. I am sure i posted about it back in 2014.It's very much a topo like build, but jhp built it, the attention to detail is top draw, it has had a fair few incarnations over the years.
ive a 1299s. Apart from panel screws falling off, boiling my crackers and rhs peg numbing my foot, it’s pretty reliable and easy maintenance. I’ve done all the mods I need to do on it. So I’m fiddling with 916 instead.
