950 Supersport Running-in Procedure....

Discussion in 'Supersport (2016 onwards)' started by Speedy23, Sep 19, 2021.

  1. OK guys, looking fwd to new red bike delivery early next month (well that's what the shop reckons, anyway.....)

Just to whet my anticipation, what is the recommended running-in regime for this bike?

You know, rev restrictions and the like - as in when can you start giving it the berries?

And any idea of likely cost of first (1000km) service?

Getting twitchy now...this is just like being 7 years old and counting the days down to Xmas....:D

    Cheers

  2. I have been lucky to have several new motorcycles. Running in has been the same for all of them. Just ride them without labouring the engine or over revving for first 2-300miles. Then build up revs for longer periods before the first oil change. Was never gentle with any of them and used to go out on quick group rides after the first 100 miles were done.
All bikes were fit and healthy, with low oil consumption.
    Yam FZ1 23,000miles
    Multistrada 1200 15,000miles
    KTM 1290 6,000miles
BMW 1200gs 25,000 miles and counting
IMO labouring the engine and being too gentle is worse than straying over recommended revs for short bursts.

  3. If you care to download the owners handbook from the internet then it gives all this information. If you ask a question like that on the internet you will get everyone's personal idea from don't bother to run it in, to ride gently for 10 zillion miles. You will then have the problem of deciding what advice you want to take.
Best just stick to what the handbook says.
My first service was completely free, but mine is a French supplied and registered bike, came with a full tank of fuel too.

  4. Thanks Bob....You are, of course, correct.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced any glitches during their running-in procedure. My own preference is not to go daft with the revs but also not to lug the engine, just keep it spinning nice and freely until it starts to loosen up.

So I'll have a look for that handbook now. Cheers.

  5. I collected the BMW from London with zero miles and within 24 hours had well over 500 miles on it. One long trip with no cold starts.

  6. Seems like you’ve answered your own question

    Excited for you!

  7. Hi Speedy, just completed running in my 950 Hypermotard, basically keep it below 6000rpm for the first 620 miles (1000km) using various rpms and gears. First service was £213 at my local Ducati dealer. Stay safe.

  8. Thanks. Useful info.

  9. Hi Bob had another look but no manual for 950. Assume it's probably a very similar regime to 935, though. Did manage to get that.

  10. Go here and Select Supersport > Supersport 950 > 2021.

  11. Found it! I was getting to the bit where you select the model then if you select 950 Supersport S it reckons there's no manual.....but if you just go for 950 Supersport, it works.
    Thanks!
