Yet Another 900ss Butchered

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Steve E, Aug 15, 2021.

  1. The engine is now out of the frame.
When I removed the clutch slave cylinder I found some damage to the alternator cover where the clutch push rod comes through. No idea how it could have happened. 100_2720.JPG 100_2718.JPG

  2. Maybe it's damage from a broken chain

  3. You may well be right Keith, but I thought there would be more damage than that.
Not that I've seen the result of a broken chain before.

  4. What's the plan with the engine full strip or wash and brush up.

  5. 100_1426.JPG The plan is to replace the clutch, check valve clearance etc.
Respray and polish casings, something like this.... View attachment 250473

  6. You were bang on Keith. Here's a pic of the attempted repair. After cleaning off the old chain lube more damage on the crankcase was found. Loads of blue Hylomar , so I guess the repair hasn't worked. Could certainly done without that. 100_2727.JPG 100_2728.JPG

  7. Urgh - bummer. I've often wondered whether it's worth making a case protector as I've seen a couple (in photos). A mate's 916 suffered the same fate and he certainly wished he'd invested in one.

  8. ooh nasty! best of luck with it.

  9. I looked into getting the exhaust ceramic coated, but couldn't justify spending £150.
It hasn't cleaned up too bad, took a while though. 100_2698.JPG thumbnail_100_2782.jpg

  10. Hi Steve
Thought this had gone a bit quiet, how's it going with the build.

  11. Not going as smoothly as I'd have liked.
The frame will be picked up from the powder coater tomorrow, and the engine should be finished by the end of next week.

  12. Got the frame home this morning. Got to say the gloss black and clear coat looks spot on.
Wouldn't hesitate on recommending Wheel Worx in Colchester, for £100+ the vat quite a bargain.
About 25 hours spent trying to tart up the engine casings. 100_2797.JPG 100_2799.JPG 100_2798.JPG thumbnail_100_2791.jpg

  13. That’s a good price for powder coating a frame.

  14. A few more bits and bobs bolted back on today. 100_2804.JPG 100_2807.JPG 100_2805.JPG

  15. Thankyou.

  16. Great work Steve,
On this model of 900ss are the oil coolers mount above the cylinder as standard, as on the early ones it is under.

  17. Yes mate. The 3 900ie's I've worked on have all had the oil cooler mounted above.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  18. Looking great!

How did you overcome the casing damage from the chain snap?
