1260 Buying Advice

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by benjit, Oct 26, 2021.

  1. Hi all,

I am going to look at a 1260S touring at a Ducati dealership later this week.

It’s a 2019 bike with c6000 miles on the clock.

They have serviced it and replaced the seized exhaust valve (which I think is common)? They are also having to replace the battery - is that unusual?

Are there any specific things I should be looking for as I go over the bike?

Anything I should be asking then about it’s maintenance history or anything else?

They’ve said that they ‘don’t really do’ test rides, but would do a ‘confirmation ride’ which seems strange? Or is this normal on a used bike?

    Thanks in advance!

    Ben

  2. I wouldn’t expect to replace either at 6k but the exhaust valve servo can easily stick and I guess a battery could go faulty. I would look at service history, number of owners and general condition. I did see one at a dealers that had warped discs and stone pits on the fork stansions which was an immediate no-no. I would deffo want a test ride. Try the rear brake when test riding. The back brake can be fine if serviced well. Anyway that can be addressed after purchase. Others have had problems with fuel sensor and some complain about oil consumption but that should have settled by 6k

  3. Really check out the operation of the DQS and the throttle mechanism smoothness. Try moving the bike forward and backwards slowly without touching the front brakes and see how much noise they make. Not unusual for them to groan, however, if more than a low pitched grumble, the discs are likely to be warped.
Ensure that it's had all of the recalls dealt with, including the relatively recent DQS cable curvature check and the side stand changed due to faulty welding.
The fuel sensor issue is pretty prevalent and if not failed yet, it will almost certainly fail at some point in the future, hopefully if the bike still has it, within the remaining years of the Ever-Red warranty cover.
I would insist on a test ride, which if declined, then I would simply walk away. Any decent shop would surely enable a test ride to ensure the bike suits you, albeit on a limited mileage basis, so as not to rack up excess mileage.

  4. Which dealer ? Andy

  5. Blade in Oxford

  6. The bike will be out of Ducati warranty unless the previous owner paid to extend it so you need to ask just what the 3 month warranty Blade provide, actually covers. IME, if it is a aftermarket underwritten insurance backed warranty, it won’t be worth the paper it’s written on. I’m also guessing that the previous owner will have been unlikely to pay for an annual service before shifting so check the service book. The bike was almost certainly a PCP purchase which would have come with restrictive conditions to meet. If you don’t like it, there is this, https://www.ducatialton.com/used-bikes/ducati/multistrada-1260-s/93616.htm. Andy

  7. Thank you. One of the big appeals is that it just makes it into the 4 ever Multistrada coverage so has 2 more years Ducati warranty. I believe they are servicing it pre sale (due next month) but will check.
I’ve seen that one in Alton, I’d go for grey but really don’t like the gold wheels!!

  8. How about a 2020 1260 with 2700miles and Ducati top box and tank bag with charger etc and heated grips for £11k

  9. I think we need to talk….

  10. Actually - I think I messaged you. Really want an S.

  11. Ok no drama but for a forum member there’s a deal

  12. From a big dealer like Blade, I'd have thought you can do a "deal" subject to satisfactory test ride ?
Batteries....if its not been kept on a battery tender I could see it possibly being weak or dead after a couple of years. Used to happen to me over 20 years ago on my bikes before I got my first Optimate ! :joy:

  13. If black wheels are the kicker on the Alton one, I happened to have my old 2013 set with no damage and would do a straight swap for the fugly gold ones. I don't think the 1260S had lightweight forged so they should be like for like.
