Would I Notice The Difference?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Carl Hauxwell, Oct 26, 2021.

  1. Greetings all. I'm still procrastinating about what to treat myself to within budget. Sadly the Panigale range is just over. So I've been reading about the 1198 for a while.

    Looking for some practical input.

Would I notice the difference on UK roads between an 1198 standard and an 1198s? I may do the occasional track day but I'm not that bothered about that side of things. So it wouldn't be a deciding factor.

Occasional use on the continent if my wrists can cope.with longer rides.

I've seen a lovely white 1198, but about 1k more for a red S model.(a shame they didn't do the nice 999 yellow). But it's rather fetching in white.

Practical view points from you much appreciated.

    Thank you.

  2. I cant really comment on a comparison between the 1198 and the 's' versions, but i do own a 2009 1198S and i would imagine the real term riding difference between the two is minimal, Ohlins all round on the S ,forged wheels and thats about it, i believe the motors are the same, although someone will be here to correct me if i'm wrong ;)...what i do know is that if you get one the low down stomp will try to pull your arms off, its seriously powerful and will sound unbelieveable with a full 70mm Termi system!.. IMO they are the last of the pretty trellis frame Dukes, and they look good in red white or black, they made a few 1098 models in yellow but not the 1198 (i think).

  3. Great. The ohlins are tempting mind. Are they readily adjustable?

  4. Same motor just different wheels and suspension/steering damper (I think).

Base has Showa S has Ohlins, both adjustable, on the road probably not much in it, wheels will be heavier on the base model so will be marginally harder to turn but again on the road probably negligible.

  5. Like @yellowducmaniac I've not ridden an 1198 base model, but I have a 2010 1198S in red. I agree with all his comments, difference is probably not great on the road, mainly a "bling" factor thing! To be honest I don't find my wrists are a problem (at least over an hour or two, not done any long rides on it) but it kills my neck! That's probably an age and (lack of) fitness thing though and I think I need a new helmet (mine has started moving up and down in the fore-aft plane, it's OK side to side; curious).

PS - if you really want a yelow one you could always get it wrapped!

  6. Work out how much you would have to pay for a set of used forged wheels, ohlins forks, ohlins shock and an ohlins steering damper. And a grand extra seems like a bargain. I'd be more concerned about whether the plastic tank is expanding, and if it's had a quickshifter on it, the gearbox is knackered.

  7. Ime the rear shock on the standard vs ohlins S model was quite a bit in adjustable range. Ie fewer clicks made more difference. That’s throwing a 1098s shock into an 848 evo.

  8. One minor disagreement with what has been said about the S forged wheels. There is a noticeable difference in handling with the lighter wheels. @pauly has a good point about the plastic tank. Not all tanks expanded but if the tank is very close to the steering damper bracket, that is indicative of it swelling. New tanks are no longer available so you would either have to live with it or by an aluminium tank from the 1198 Corse. Andy

  9. I would of thought that if you first rode a standard 1198 and then rode the S model you would feel the difference especially the forged wheels .

  10. When I looked for an ali tank, second hand was around £1k, if you could find one. New, around double that.

  11. Tank range is crap on an 1198 i could just about get 80 miles to a tank.

I to had a white one. Modded a fair bit very nice bike.

  13. Don't some aftermarket ali tanks have a larger capacity?

  14. Yes i fitted a larger (non Alloy) tank to mine, i didnt like it cos i thought it spoilt the lines of the bike and i also had an umbilical hernia at the time and the raised height of the tank at the rear interfered with it!...ouch...see pic, bins included for @Ducbird :D

  16. I loved my base 1198. The suspension is fine once adjusted. Lightweight wheels are easy to find. Theres not much between the 'ohlins' and the showa I believe as its cheap ohlins. Wheels would be nice tho.

  17. I'd say Öhlins is a expensive Showa. When you have them both in pieces there is not a lot of difference.

  18. I haven't owned an 1198 base or an S, but I did own and ride an 1198 SP which was the last sports performance version Ducati produced before the Panigale arrived.
The SP had a Trellis frame, Ohlins suspension front and rear, DTC, DQS, DDA, Brembo Monobloc brakes, Marchesini forged wheels, slipper clutch, special lightweight exhaust, and a larger aluminium tank (about 18litres).
In my opinion, the bike rode well, but with 170bHP needed careful handling. To get the best out of the bike, the suspension benefited from being properly set-up, including sag settings for the main rider. The aluminium tank removed the problem of tank swelling, and gave the bike a little more range; but still not great depending on throttle use.
A lot of these enhancements are not essential and other versions will already have plenty of engine power and torque for road use, and I'm sure upgrades could be added retrospectively if desired.
I found the riding position to be more extended than on a Panigale, and it could be quite tiring on longer rides.
However, it was the last of the Trellis frame Ducatis, is probably one of the best looking bikes they have produced and I enjoyed owning it. I probably should have kept it, but needed the space for a Panigale R.
I hope this helps, and good luck with your search.
    Tom.
