Would anyone have any details of what ST2 engine numbers relate to what year? I have recently purchased a 1997 ST2 which has had a recon engine fitted. Sadly the previous owner has no knowledge of its year. The original engine number was 001551, however the new one is 002608. When I owned vintage British bikes I was able to find information that would give a year of manufacture range, ie engine number xxxx to xxxxx was assembled between xxxx and xxxx. Sadly I can't find anything on Ducati ST2's. The reason for the query is that I am changing the oil and I know earlier ST2's used 20W50, however later ones from 2000 on changed to 10W40. Going by the difference in sequential number I would think my engine is still one that would use 20W50. Thanks for any info.
Can you see the whole number from the ZDM bit. Is there a letter before the serial 002608? This table should give the year 1971 = 1 1981 = B 1991 = M 2001 = 1 1972 = 2 1982 = C 1992 = N 2002 = 2 1973 = 3 1983 = D 1993 = P 2003 = 3 1974 = 4 1984 = E 1994 = R 2004 = 4 1975 = 5 1985 = F 1995 = S 2005 = 5 1976 = 6 1986 = G 1996 = T 2006 = 6 1977 = 7 1987 = H 1997 = V 2007 = 7 1978 = 8 1988 = J 1998 = W 2008 = 8 1979 = 9 1989 = K 1999 = X 2009 = 9 1980 = A 1990 = L 2000 = Y 2010 =A
Thanks Chris. I got the year of the bike itself from the VIN number, letter V denotes 1997. However, the engine number is just ZDM944W2*002608* Cheers
If you are riding in the UK and you buy a recognised brand of oil, makes no odds using 20W50 or 10W40. My preference for all my Ducatis is Motul 7100 10W40 or 10W50. Andy
Thanks. I’ve ended up going with what the manual recommends for a 1997 machine, ie 20w50 (castrol Power 1 SemiSynthetic). My thinking being that there are only 1057 engine units between the 2 numbers (2608 & 1551). I would have thought that Ducati would have produced more than that between Aug 97 when my bike was registered and when the manual changed to recommend 10w40 in 99/2000.
