Ecu Repair Recommendation?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Adam_Irish, Nov 30, 2021.

  1. Hi, I have a Monster 1000Sie which I suspect the ECU has an issue. No spark on horizontal cylinder. Wiring checks out ok, coil pack is fine. Runs on vertical cylinder so suspect crank sensor is ok. No EML.

I’ve found a couple of companies which repair this issue on the 59M ecu but just after recommendations if anyone has any?

I would happily replace the ECU but finding one is like hens teeth. If you have a known good one for sale then do please let me know.

    Cheers
    Adam

  2. I would look for a really good independent electrical circuit repair man, it's likely to be of the age where most components are 'TSOP' (which is the electrical chips where you can see the silver legs coming out of them) rather that BGA (where you can't, they are soldered from underneath and not as easy to re-work).

a half decent electrical repair specialist should be able to clean and 're-flow' the board to ensure that there are no dry solder joints. If there is an issue with a chip, they might even be able to take it off and read it in a dedicated reader, which is what I've seen done in the past, likewise integrated resister packs etc can all be tested. I imagine there will be some parralel circuitry for each cylinder, perhaps a mirrored board running into a central eeprom

  3. Look up Avanti Race Parts. They've repaired several for me over the years. Although the ECU is a pretty common one in the car game, I had no luck with car repairers as they couldn't test the ECU correctly in it's bike configuration.

  4. May be cheaper to source a second hand ECU and get it flashed to the correct map with Immo off.

  5. I'd have to agree with ChrisW
There are always a few on EBAY for @£100.

But of course as Chrisw says you'll ned the immobiliser disabled to use it.

  6. Russ at Ducati Mondo (Halifax) might be able to help. He has a decent stash of old ecus

  7. Had an issue with a 04 monster rebuild , put a race ECU in it in the end, worked fine, but without usual security features associated with the OEM ECU

  8. Thinking about it, I've probably got the original ECU, off a 2004 m1000 monster, is that the correct vintage? If it is, I'll see if I can find it. I didn't use it as I threw the broken clocks away and ECU would not work without them, or we didn't have the right knowledge to make it work.

  9. That would work providing it is an IAW59M. Drop me a PM.

  10. I'll try and find it, then message you, if you don't hear from me for a day or so message me to remind me, it's in my other house.. hopefully..

  11. Thanks for the reply’s guys. Avanti was the main company I was looking at so I’m happy to see some positive feedback! I will give them a call tomorrow.

I did consider getting another ecu and getting it reflashed but I’m not sure I will gain much over getting mine repaired though ECU’s aren’t my forte. There seems to be a lot of different versions of the same 59M unit. Very confusing(though that’s not difficult:D).

Ivor, yes, mine is a 2004 bike. That’s very kind indeed! I may speak to you after I’ve spoken to Avanti and see what is the easiest route to take. I’ve spent hours trying to find the fault but to no avail. I just want it to work again!o_O

  12. IAW59Ms do suffer from coil driver failure.

  13. So I understand. I have read a lot of reports of it happening across the Internet.

I had only had the bike for 2 weeks when it happened. It was like someone had switched the front cylinder off. Absolutely no warning, fine one second then would barely pull it’s own weight the next.

A shame really as I was loving the bike up to that point. It’s got some making up to do!:D

  14. I can happily endorse Avanti Race Parts. They sorted my ECU. I opted for an exchange but there are various options and you can have a different mapping if required to suit your exhaust/state of tune. The immobiliser also works as original so no grief there.

  15. Searched for the ECU yesterday and couldn't find it, or the M800 one I should also have, I'll keep looking. Sorry for any false hopes

  16. Perfect, thanks. I've been trying to call them but no answer as yet.

No problem at all mate. Thanks though, I appreciate it.

  17. Nobody likes a thread without a resolution so just an update to say my Bike is now sorted.

A very kind member on here got in touch that had an ECU. He took mine, copied the map from mine and put it onto the new one. I fitted it this evening and it fired straight up and ran beautifully. I had forgotten just how loud Termi pipes on an air cooled twin are though!:grinning:

My issue was the coil driver on the horizontal cylinder had died.

Thank you folks. Appreciate the help.
