Hypermotard 1100 Evo Starting Issue

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by nadg63, Dec 6, 2021.

  1. My 2010 HM 1100 Evo is being a right pain when trying to start it whilst it is hot. It really labours/struggles to turn over and only just manages to fire up - eventually. Oddly when the bike is first fired up from cold it starts straight away without any problems, same if after a ride I let it sit for a while to cool down, it's only an issue after a ride whilst the engine etc is hot.

It has been suggested I need to get a set of upgraded battery leads/cables for it, any other suggestions out there!?

    Cheers

  2. Hi Nadg63,

I had a very similar problem with my 2008 MS 1100S, about 4 years ago. Moto Rapido pulled their hair out trying to fathom it out. From memory, in the end after trying everything else (including slaving a battery, directly connecting the starter motor to an external battery to take the cables out the mix, etc, etc) they replaced the crank sensor, which significantly helped but didn't completely solve the problem. When the bike was back home I kept playing and in the end stumbled across a temporary bodge which is still working to this day.

I removed some of the shims on the crankshaft sensor (left hand side) so the pick-up was closer to the fly-wheel. In fact whilst experimenting I removed one too many as you could see marks from where the sensor and fly-wheel must have brushed together. Anyway, it seemed to have fixed the problem and made me wonder that if there is a magnet in the fly-wheel, maybe the magnet could be losing it's strength and by moving the sensor closer, it was easier to pick-up the impulse???

Not sure if my theory is correct, but the above 'modification' worked for my bike. The other thing to try is when hot, slightly open the throttle whilst the engine is cranking. Before I changed the shim stack on the pick-up, re-starting after re-fuelling was a real pain and this definitely helped.

    Good luck.

  3. I too had a similar issue with my 2008 M1100S a few years back.
It would intermittently refuse to start when hot.
It appears to have gone away now after doing nothing in particular.
    Strange.

  4. Disconnect, clean and reconnect every electrical connection in the starter circuit including the main frame earth to battery and the starter earth bolt to engine. You may have corrosion causing an issue with poor connections which gets exacerbated when things get hot. Can’t promise it’s a solution but it’s free and worth trying.
