Garage Insulation / Boarding Advice

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by JoePeps, Jan 1, 2022.

  1. So I need to insulate / board out my garage and after a bit of advice if possible.…

The garage is integrated which shares 1 internal wall with the house, 2 external single skin walls and then it will have a new insulated sectional shutter on the front. It’s a hipped roof so I need to board and insulate to form a ceiling. I’ve got a few options that I’ve come up with and not sure what will actually be the best.
I want to be able to maintain a reasonable temperature in there, sat 10ish degC?

    1. Fit some timber batons back to the walls, use rock wool or similar between and then standard plasterboard over the top. Then screw some boards up to the trusses and rock wool on top.

    2. Fit the same idea of timber batons but then use insulated plasterboard panels to these and the trusses. Boards are 5x the price but quicker, easier and no need for rock wool so costs get a little closer for each option.

    3. A mix of both?

    4. Just insulate and board the ceiling, baton and standard plasterboard the walls and that may be good enough to maintain a low temperature, and cheaper?

Then a few questions and other bits for both:

    - for the wall onto the house I guess it wouldn’t really be worth insulating this?
    - if going for option 1 what thickness rock wool?
    - I will put a loft access in
    - I have an idea about future wall fixings behind the boards so that’s sorted

    Any help much appreciated.

  2. Baton, Vapor barrier 50mm insulation (or 25mm if that’s too much), plasterboard or plybourd depending on finish you want

Also sort floor and roof imho

  3. Thanks for the reply but have you read all of my post?

  4. Certainly as Bradders has pointed out, or the wall could start sweating more than a donkey climbing Mt Vesuvius on a hot summers day.

  5. Here's an official guide to internal wall insulation - a long read. What you've not got in any of your options is the essential vapour barrier/membrane. Basically the order of things using separate layers is wall, insulation (between battens or on top), vapour barrier, plasterboard. The vapour barrier prevents warm (=moist) air condensing on any of the cold surfaces...

  6. Thanks mate I’ll have a good read through that.

The boards I’m planning on using have a vapour barrier incorporated in their make up, and by putting them on batons off the wall it means there will be some ventilation between them and the wall up to the roof space so air can circulate?

  7. Sounds like a good solution:upyeah:

  8. My builder went the other way: insulation board with vapour barrier and normal plasterboard
