Icon Engine Performance Upgrade Options

Discussion in 'Scrambler' started by Android853sp, Jun 21, 2021.

  1. Getting there bit by bit, Ohlins DU505 rear shock fitted and standard seat re-upholstered with memory foam. Brembo RCS15 front brake master cylinder winging its way to me although I’m anticipating having to get a new m/c to ABS manifold line made up with the correct angle banjo and I still have to figure out a mounting for the fluid reservoir. The Brembo universal RCS kit doesn’t allow for the Icon mirror mounting on the m/c clamp. Anyway, next thing to consider is, what, if any, engine performance upgrades are available ? Not too keen on the stretching the finances for the Termignoni full system with CAT delete and upmap so hoping there is something a little more economical. Andy

  2. Please report on the MC upgrade... I've had a few "eek, not enough brakes, goodbye cruel world" moments on mine and upgraded to HH pads (better) but some kind of MC + calliper / disk upgrades remain on my mind... not ready to die yet.

Good comment on the mirror... hadn't considered that.

I have not bothered upgrading the headers (yet) as a shouty exhaust just got annoying. I got a Rexxer map on mine and we just turned all the knobs to 11. It now does about 80-90 miles on a tank of wet stuff. My Dad has the Termi upmap and that's a much better job. Worth the money TBH and the Termi + upmap increases the midrange noticably without being too shouty.

I do have a high-level Termi system sitting in the shed that I'm unlikely ever to fit (because I like my side bags) that I could be persuaded to part with if that's of interest... :D

Good work though, Scramblers are mega underrated little funbundles. Love mine.

  3. @Fire3500, huge amount of fun and very capable. Agree about the loud exhaust but interesting that the Termignoni and Up Map give a noticeable mid range a boost. I fitted Brembo SC pads which made a difference but I was really hoping for something better. It’s not the m/c clamp that’s the issue, the universal reservoir support arm looks like it bends just where the mirror arm locates. Still might get the kit anyway and use it as a template. Will let you know how the m/c works out. Andy

  4. The best thing I found was to get more air into the motor. MWR do a kit that effectively puts two filtered panels into the sides of the air box. The inlet under tank is quite restrictive and not well fed with air anyhow. The exhaust is quite restricted by the cat, but getting more in is the best place to start and most productive bang for buck.

  5. You star! :D

  6. @nelly, anything needed over and above the air box mod ? Started reading a post about the mod on a US based Scrambler forum but was losing the will to live :joy: Andy

  7. A decent air filter will help if the oem is past it’s best. Sprint would be a good choice as they’re dry and prevent oil build up on the inlet sensors.
It’s a simple motor and while it won’t light the world up, getting more air in and getting it out better does help quite a bit. When you start playing, you’ll see how restrictive the inlet is

  8. @Fire3500, just to update this, Scramboli went in for belts and a valve shim service on Monday and I got them to finally fit the Brembo RCS15 front brake master cylinder. Good news is, the OE brake line has enough flexibility and length to fit without a problem and the clamp you tagged would be ideal although the OE one does the job. Comment from the mechanic after the post service test ride was, "the front brake is sharp" :D Probably going to get a ride out on Sunday so will see how it feels on the road. Andy

  9. Shall eagerly await the next chapter! :D

  10. @Fire3500, finally had a ride the Wednesday after Christmas, about 70 miles and despite the awful weather, Carole’s conclusion was, a huge improvement.
I remember from the conversation with the workshop when I picked the bike up after the service, the front brake micro switch wiring is too short to reach the new position but a DIY extension is a simple job. Andy
