996 Considering This 996 Purchase - Help And Advice Please

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by 900theginge, Nov 4, 2021.

  1. Hello all,

I’m looking at purchasing this 996 but before committing, I’d be really grateful of any advice, comments, thumbs up or down on this particular bike. I rarely buy from dealers as I know they add their mark up which I’d prefer not to pay! It seems to be about ‘average’ market price, it has really low miles, is a UK bike and is really original which is what I like.

this is another yellow one on eBay priced at £7295 ono and again looks nice and original.

I’m guessing red is more desirable?

    thanks in advance, Rob

  2. Yellow one appears to have magnesium wheels.

  3. First one (red) looks pretty original although some of the fasteners look aftermarket (i.e. the bolts holding the upper/lower panels together - why would you change them, and the rear wheel nut). No mention of service history, they say they will do a belt service - does this mean they are going to replace the belts or just a visual check?

Second one (yellow) has more bling, including magnesium Marchesini's which are a pretty rare, lots of carbon and exhausts, I'm not keen on the clutch cover or the polished rearsets mind. It does have new belts and tyres though and a recent service (doesn't say where from though in the ad).

Given the age I'd be looking at rockers/cams, battery, belts, tyres, hoses etc as worn/perishable items for both - I'd be tempted to find out the details around these before I would commit as it could get costly.

Other than mileage I'd probably go for the 2nd one personally, has a lot of the aftermarket stuff you would end up putting on, the wheels being the biggest single expense, and it's yellow which is extremely rare.

  4. I bought an SPS at auction recently in "running order" with FSH, but very little recent use.
There was nothing wrong with it, but for peace of mind I have renewed belts, oil, filters brake fluid, pads, fork fluid & seals, coolant, tyres, rear spring, suspension set up and manifold tuning.

  6. No problem.

As for value I'm really not sure what a 996 would go for, obviously the yellow one has a few thousand pounds worth of extra's compared to the red one, I guess autotrader/bikterader/MCN etc would give you a baseline.

  7. I third it. Its wanted for nothing AND you can slag him off here if you find a mismatched screw anywhere on it for our entertainment.

  8. When someone uses the mirror/bar end as a bike stand it kind of says it all to me about them? That’s my opinion, so I’d be going for the yellow one (or the one on here) for that reason alone…..

  9. It does baffle me why they do that!! Lazy dealers

  10. Re the magnesium wheel comment - my understanding is that the standard 5 spokes are forged alloy and that the magnesium 5 spoke wheels are an upgrade?
If that is correct, how do you tell the difference?

  11. If you look at the yellow one’s wheels, you can see the difference in the inner ribs on the back. These are the later style reinforced mags which are stonger then the non webbed ones. The webbing at the base of the spokes is also different. The shape of the spokes is also different.
