What's This All About, Eh Precious?

  1. I made that Gif nigh-on fifteen years ago. I tried uploading it as an avatar, but it was too large a file. I uploaded it to the Test thread to test if it would be accepted for that; and I uploaded that particular Gif because, as far as I’m aware, it’s the only one I still have. I may have a mental block, but I still don’t see why posts to a ‘Test thread’ go live – or, rather, I think it’s a misnomer; but be that as it may, if I want to see how something looks on the forum software, this is where I’m going to post to, and if it goes live, so be it.
I didn’t expect you guys would even look at it, let alone comment! So, eventually it seemed I’d best post that she was my cat, lest anyone think it merely a ‘funny cat Gif’ I’d found on the internet; and having done that, it seemed reasonable to upload the Jpegs I assembled it from, just to show that.

In ’98 I’d adopted an epileptic cat. I had to dose her on Phenobarbital, and keep her indoors; but I’d feed her outside the back door in springtime so’s she get some fresh air. And a tortoiseshell kitten started turning up hoping I’d feed her, too. I gave her what I judged enough to stop her starving, but not enough that she’d leave where she came from if she actually had a home. Then when the phenobarb no longer worked and my one was severely fitting more and more often, I had her euthanized. So the outdoor feeding stopped, and the kitten stopped turning up begging.
There was some glorious weather that summer. The Golden Privet I’d planted out front two or three years earlier was mature enough to be an effective screen, and one day when I went out the front watering, I found the tortie curled up at the base of the hedge. This became a regular occurrence. Then, what with the heat, I’d leave both front and back doors open; and was bemused to find the cat using the house as a shortcut.
One day I got my washing in, folded it, put it in the basket, and left it in my bedroom for putting away later. And when I went upstairs, later, I found the tortie curled up on my laundry! That’s when I realized she’d decided to move in.
A few days later I was sitting on the sofa with her curled up on my lap. I was thinking I needed to go to the shops and trying to bring myself to disturb her, when my dad walked in. He sat down in an armchair, so I picked her up, still asleep, and plonked her on his lap, and she continued sleeping, and was still there when I got back.
One month before I moved to Devon, she went over the back fence, and I heard one neighbourhood kid say “There’s your cat!”, and another call “Rosie!”; so now I knew her name and who she belonged to. So later I picked her up and started to take her ‘home’. I met her lady owner coming the other way and I said “I’ve got something that belongs to you!”, to which she replied that I could keep her. Basically the issue was that Rosie didn’t enjoy living in a house with two young children – torties being known as ‘temperamental’.
One month later I got in the passenger side of a Luton, with dad driving. Rosie was in a carry case on my lap. She made so much noise that I took her out before we’d gone a mile. She stood on my left thigh, her front paws on the windowsill, and watched the world zip past for about half an hour. Then she got up on the shelf behind me and slept the rest of the way.
At the house in Crediton, the plan was to keep her in for three days, but she made so much noise that I let her out. Three hours later I figured I’d better go look for her; then opened the front door and there she was, on the doorstep.
She used to come for walks in the countryside with me; which I got a real kick out of: walking through fields and woodland with a cat! When we lived in London and I walked to the High St. she’d walk with me the quarter mile to the main road, then nip into someone’s garden; then when I came back, she’d reappear and walk back home with me.
She lived with me in eight properties, and was never a problem moving house at all. She stayed with me for eighteen years – during which time I saw her chase an adult fox the length of the garden, and make a Doberman whimper. I figure she was nineteen when she died.
She was something like the square root of my own child multiplied by my best friend, and the most constant companion of my adult life. I used to think that, had she the vocal apparatus – and maybe another decade or two - she’d have learnt English, she was that intelligent.

  2. Sincere apologies WTL, I didn’t realise that I’d stumbled on the truth, I thought you had speeded footage up or edited it somehow.

  3. You mean the 'epicyclic' comment? That was the previous cat, the epileptic one. Anyway Chris, either way I don't see that there's anything to apologise for.
