1199 Up Or Down

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by johnnyrotten13, Jan 16, 2022.

  1. Will a pristine 1199s in showroom condition with only 527 genuine miles on the clock go up in value? I bought her in 2020 to leave to my 6 year old granddaughter so should I stick to my original plan or sell her and put the money in a account for her? I get my pleasure by sitting and looking at the beauty of it lol and I know if I sell I will never find one in better condition really, and I already made that mistake in 2003 when I let my 916sp go! I've regretted that till this day .

  2. keep it...

how could you sell a 916sp ?? :astonished:

  4. Hmmm, don’t think the 1199S is all that limited. But with that kind of low mileage I guess it’ll always appeal to a collector.

It might do good money in the way MK1 Escorts do. Which means hanging on to it for 40 years. Gumph!!

  5. And with the fuel changes and smog restrictions which are inevitable over the next ten years...

I think Escort and the like plus Z900B, RG500 & Elsie's are expensive because all the youngsters (us) who couldn't afford one then now have the money and will pay it, to fulfil a dream.

There's a lot less young guys/ girls on bikes these days, so there will be a lot less demand for '20's dream bikes in the future methinks (leaving aside limited editions & super rarities).

  6. Depends what you paid for it, but up eventually probably. Balance that against storing/maintaining/insuring it for however many years.

  7. What if?

Cant see it making money, even Bayliss 1098's are in the gutter and they are a "quality" Ducati. I'd sell and put the money into stocks or towards a house deposit.

  8. To keep any sort of value you're going to have to keep it serviced and in tip top condition, you can't just leave it for 20 years. Likewise I will assume you will need to insure it so taking that expense into account will it be of any greater value?

It's not a rare model, but the mileage will help.

  9. Ouch! I've just tried to get my friend to sell his 916 sp, he offered it me 10 years ago for 10k :( . He has owned it from new. North of 25k and its still not for sale, it must be nice not to need money.
I don't think your 1199 will be in the same league .

  10. If it's main purpose is as an investment then it's a bad one. If you're justifying having something nice lying around by saying "i'm going to hand it down to someone" then if it makes you happy why not...

But the same money in a S&S ISA is almost guaranteed to perform significantly better than a bike that's not a limited edition, was made in large numbers and isn't likely to ever be a collectors item.

  11. Agreed, the cost of upkeep, even if just servicing and insurance make 99% of bikes a poor investment...unless you're riding them then you can offset the cost of ownership/relative depreciation of those slightly special bikes with :D

  12. It's not a 916SP and never will be.

  13. And was followed by a bike, that was a bigger and better twin.

  14. Sell it then and buy a 916/996 sp/sps

  15. Put yer cash in premium bonds, i had some cash to invest last year and my winnings from the bonds up to now far exceeds any interest i would have earned from the best ISA.:upyeah:...although not quite as pretty to look at in the garage as a 1199S or even better a 916 SP.

  16. off topic but unless you've been *really* lucky the average return on premium bonds is 1%, *most* people get nothing. basically any S&S ISA would have returned you many times more in 2021

  17. Depends how much you invest in the bonds, obviously the more you've got in the bigger chance of winning.

  18. even if you've got the max £50k invested the median average return over a year is £450.. obviously you could be lucky and win more, you could get nothing.. the median avg is still ~1%. premium bonds are a lottery not an investment.

the s&p 500 went up by around 27% in 2021.

  19. As an investment to leave to your granddaughter, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Gold coins or, if you’re tech savvy, Crypto Currency. The way governments have been printing ‘cash’ over recent years I’d want a useful asset or old money. And when my time is up I’d like my official balance sheet to read £0.

  20. bikes are only really a good investment if there something special and you've had them for years already so you havent spend big bucks buying them.
