1260 To 42 Or Not To 42 ?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Groundhog, Mar 30, 2019.

  1. I've noticed this as well. The Panigale was way too high necessitating -1F (or the equivalent of +3R). The Monster has now 14,000kms where I'm converting to +2R sometimes this month. The Multistrada is going-in for its first service (1000kms) this week where I'm considering changing the rear to +2R right now. No sense in waiting since a sprocket and a chain is not that expensive for the performance benefit you're getting.

  2. Ok guys, I’m thinking of changing to a 42t rear. I’m wondering about the chain, what is standard and what size is recommended to account for the larger sprocket? Is standard 108 so I need a 110 530 pitch?

  3. The 1260 has a longer swinging arm than the 1200 DVT, std length is 114. With a 42 tooth rear using a 116 chain is recommended according to these guys.

I went with a JT Sprocket holder, a JT 40 tooth rear and an ESJOT 14 tooth front and a DID 530 x 114 ZVM chain. Works well in regard to driveability IMHO. Would have gone 15/42 had a quick change 42T sprocket been available at the time but the 14/40 option is only marginally shorter geared.

  4. many thanks pal

  5. I went 42 on back last year, bought in from CarpiMoto (import duty applies), the bike is far better in terms of gearing, now not swapping between 1/2 in town and in mid speed 30 - 70 vastly smoother.

downside! the chain is very close to swinging arm.. 1-2mm - but even after a bit of chain stretch it is still clear

    I would recommend the mod

  6. Agree with other comments above - better around town and also make 6th more usable. The only downside I found was I got through back tyres a bit quicker :)

  7. definitive proof that 42 must be good :upyeah:

  8. Good and very informative topic. :upyeah: Re. 14/40 set up is the length of the chain the same as original or it needs to be longer.

  9. standard chain with -1 on the front. On the 1200 you could go up 2 on the rear with the standard chain but it was tight.
