My bike came with (bleddy ugly) exhaust wraps on it and I am keen to have them off the bike pronto and to subsequently polish the soot pipes so it all looks 'ansome again. However, that said, the bike get's really hot when riding it at anything other than illegal speeds. So, before I remove it, I wondered what the general consensus is in terms of how effective wrapping the exhausts is in mitigating heat build up in the engine? Does the wrap make any difference to the actual engine running temps in anyones experience? From what I gather, the car tuners seem to think it helps engine temps, but you have to wrap the header (mine is wrapped to the header on the vertical and not the horizontal --see pics) Having done a bit of searching on here, one comment that jumped out at me and seemed overlooked is the fact that a large source of heat transfer to the rear end of the rider likely came from the rear subframe, as it bolted to the rear cylinder. There is some gold reflective tape on the U/S of the rear exhaust guard, no idea if that works? I am keen to keep engine temps down as the bike has no fan fitted and I intend to ride it on the road in the summer, however, if the general consensus is that the heat wrap will not effect the engine running temps, its coming off asap. Cheers
I'm guessing you have the DP 3 system? with the front S type manifold? are you also still running the AIS system or have you plugged the air feed already? as this may help. but not running a fan on the road with a standard cooler set up is a bit brave, as my 1199 ran hot, but one thing i can recommend before you make too many changes is to remove and flush the lower radiator as mine was full of sludge and also clean the lower radiator fins, as they were also blocked.
Thanks Nathanhu, I drained the coolant and thoroughly cleaned the top and bottom rads last weekend. Even though they both looked clean, it’s surprising the amount of grit and small particles of dirt I managed to extract from them. I’ve refilled the system with water wetter and de-ionised water. This already seems to have helped the running temps. But as you say, it is risky running on the road without a fan, and I certainly would not let the bike get too hot at any given time trying. I’m not entirely sure what model the exhaust system is, I note it has Reparto Corse stamped on it? I will also have a look to see if the AIS has been disconnected.
