959 Help

  1. Not trying to incite a riot and I've read lots of posts here and elsewhere, considering getting a lithium battery... Not taken the fairing off but assume mines lead as it has an old ducati charger that plugs in under the cowl. What I'm wondering is can I just swap it out for a skyrich and still use the charger plug and get a lithium charger to charge it?
Reason I'm asking it almost didn't start on me last week when out and it seems it needs loads of amps to crank it, plus the tracker seems to hammer the battery.

  2. I got the Ducati upgraded battery cables, the protective heat shield “carpet” as described by Ducati, which folds around the Lithium battery and also opted for the vented battery cover. Got it all ready to go on just waiting for an opportunity to fit it. Had lithium on my last Ducati and no problems with it. Turned over the engine much better then my 959 does now.

  3. Yeah my biggest concern is the bike gets to 100°C easily in traffic or idling so wasn't sure if that was going to cause issues especially when it gets warm in the summer.
Do you have pics of yours and what battery did you get? Do you have part numbers for the cables? and lastly does yours charge via the cowl?

  4. As @bettes says, OE cables have tended to be a generic Ducati weak point so worth checking the condition, especially the earth connection. IME, a lithium battery doesn’t like cold weather so your first start of the day isn’t the easiest. Warming the battery up by having the headlights on for 30 seconds tends to help. Lithium definitely does not like the steady drain from a tracker so my advice is to invest in a good quality, modern charger. I use the NOCCO Genius 2 on my V4 and so far, (3 years) the bike has started fine every time. Andy

  5. Sorry, no numbers. Call Craig at MR and he’ll sort it. I don’t charge from under the cowl as it seems a bit of a faff compared to having a fly lead next to the clutch slave.

  6. I switched my Street Triple 675 battery to a lithium ion one (no other related electrical changes), and ran it for 5 years without any issues (at which point I sold the bike). High weight saving.

My 959 Corse came with lithium ion, and I had no issues in 3 years.

I'll be looking to make the same mod to my incoming SF V2.

  7. Nice thanks all, she's due a service in a week or two so I'll see if I can get it swapped then and ask about the cables. Not too worried about the weight saving at over 15st I could shed a few that would make it lighter!

  8. Any recommendations of ducati service centres in South Wales. Been struggling to get hold of M&P in Cardiff for a quote on the water pump wheels and a 7k service?

  9. Where abouts in s Wales, out west? There's one recommended in Milford, but I've not tried them
Just to clarify, this is a garage that'll deal with ducatis not a recognised Ducati service centre ( as far as I'm aware)

  10. I'm near Cardiff, so nearby would be Swansea or Bristol. I did speak to John at Coventry who arrange pick ups as I'd like to go with them as I've heard good things, just wondered if anywhere nearby was recommended too.

  11. I'm guessing Bristol ( riders still there?), there's also a guy in Cheltenham and outside Bristol ( Moto Luigi?)

  12. http://louigimoto.com/
I've not used him , apart from actually buying some spares, but I believe he has a good reputation, I'm sure others can confirm or otherwise

  13. Spoke to him earlier, said he's insanely busy until June and wouldn't do the water pump on the 959. Says he mainly works on the older models and racing stock.

  14. Ah sorry,

  15. S'ok he was a nice guy chatted for ages!

  17. Try @cookster
Think he has a garage in Cheltenham/gloucs

  18. @Ivor thanks mate but i only really mot them, i use Tim at moto-vation racing for my servicing or jhp for my panigale

  19. No worries, thanks for the pointers
