Hi all, have just swapped my Pantah 500 with an 851 and getting familiar with the new bike. I need some advice on the 851 tyre pressures please, owner manual says 2.9 bars front and rear, this sounds a bit high to me. Also front and rear in most cases should have different pressures. Any advice please from anyone having an 851 (or 888 I suppose)? Bike is for road use, wears Pirelli Supercorsa. Cheers.
i'm flattered Pete but my reply will be both controversial and also be over-ridden by the people that know best on here, i'm trying to limit myself to threads where replies are more "black and white these" days. Best advice to O.P. is to gauge a "middle of the road" (npi) idea from everyone's replies. As long as you don't have the 16" front wheel, 31.5 psi front/30 psi rear is in the ballpark but could throw this right out the window depending on ambient temperature/how hard you ride/how suspension set/rider's weight.
IMO, 2.9 bar is too high for a Supercorsa and I don't subscribe to the theory rear pressure should be higher than front. But what do I know ? Andy
^ I rest my case Best to experiment around those numbers and (Carefully) see what feedback you get on the road
To add confusion to the mix, I thought that the tyre pressure depended more on the tyre, not the bike, I'd ask a tyre fitter....
Good point, Pirelli recommendes 2.2 - 2.5 bars, 32-36 psi. https://www.pirelli.com/tyres/en-gb/motorcycle/catalogue/motorcycle-brand/ducati/851-strada#
I'd had my 851 for 26 years, I've tried several different tyres and pressures but 32-36 psi works for me. Steve R
Yep brilliant bikes, I used to own 2 one with a 888 motor and the other (which I still have) has a new 955cc top spec motor. It's down to 350 lbs wet and kicks out 140 rwbhp. Steve R
I thought i would hold back on this question based on when i went into the dealership they said to me what's the handling like, and i said not very clever.....they said because you have NO air in the tyres sir.
FWIW the Ducati Workshop Manual for the 851 says 2.9 Bar front and rear; the Manual for the SP3 says 2.2/2.5 Bar front/rear.
