For Sale Getting Scammed On Df...my Experience.

Discussion in 'Parts, Accessories & Clothing For Sale' started by Paul55, Apr 8, 2022.

  1. Yeah ...tried it on with me ..."hey mate ....contact Dave@etc etc my mate has one " ...I reported to admin..... didn't look right to me. The new member status rings the alarm bell with me straight away.

  2. I had a message from this member couple of weeks ago.

  3. i think we all need to remember that its very easy to become trusting and, whilst less so on here, most people you speak to on the net are strangers. Would you give a bloke down the pub £100 for something he says he is selling and will post to you when he gets home ?
Scammer love places like this for the reasons covered. People feel ' at home ' and safe so they slip in and make use of those feelings .
Anyone genuinely selling something on here should not be upset if asked to provide a little more details just to be sure. It should be common practice .

  4. On a Forum I run I've added rules that new members can't PM or post in sales sections until they've completed a minimum number of posts. Just a suggestion..

  5. We’re looking at what can be done through the forum software :)

  7. Anyone that PM's you out of the blue
Check their profile see if they have posted anything if there are no posts avoid and message by "start a conversation" to me and or Terry
You can check their profile and posts.

We CANNOT see who is private messaging

This one was clever that Nasher couldn't add either me or Terry to the conversation.

The only person who bought it to my attention was Nasher

I keep an eye on as much as I can of new profiles that post on the forum

  8. Normally scammers/bots are easy to spot when they join the forum (and all get checked I might add).

    They either have:
    1. A ridiculous username
    2. A ridiculous email address
    3. A ridiculous location
    4. Or don’t list a bike manufacturer/model

Or a combination of all of those.

The scammers that got through the net didn’t have any of those, and even listed a bike/model.

As I’ve said before……please check if they are new or don’t have any posts. If anything looks suspicious then please report it to me and/or @Ducbird :)

  9. I very nearly fell for this but at the last minute spotted that “and a packet of Wotsits” was missing, any true DF member would never forget the Wotsits ;)

@Paul55 kudos to you for being open about getting caught, and glad it wasn’t a serious amount of money, but money none the less. It’s a constant minefield out there and it’s doesn’t take much to get caught off guard :upyeah:

  10. happened twice in last two weeks but didn't commit to anything as a bit of a scam-receiving veteran, and so no point in publishing a warning as unconfirmed as a "scam attempt" One p.m. has disappeared so I guess this was probably Dave's mate.

  14. Can’t you get your money back from PayPal?

  15. Not if you pay 'Friends and Family'.

  16. Summary. PayPal Goods and Services is good for buyers and sellers who need to exchange money safely online. When you use PayPal Goods and Services, the transaction is automatically protected by PayPal Purchase Protection, which can give peace of mind to both parties

  17. Those scammers know their rights......:(

  18. Why would anyone accept a friends and family transaction from someone you don't know from Adam is beyond me.

PayPal nearly always sides with the buyer in any dispute...so always use normal PayPal for the protection... :upyeah:

Edit: obviously some people on the forum are like family anyway.. even if we've never met. ;)
