A Slightly Different Clutch Replacement?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by ImAGoose, Apr 16, 2022.

  1. I have a 2011 Monster 796, took a slip and dropped it on some ice in winter.

Handlebars are bent and need replacing, so does the clutch master cylinder.

The bike I believe comes stock with a 12mm or 13mm bore and 20mm travel lever clutch master cylinder.

I have an opportunity to buy a clutch master cylinder from a 2014 Ducati Panigale 899 with 15mm bore, unused, for a great deal, so thought I'd consider it.

I understand the master cylinder will differ in characteristics and would take me away from a unit with integrated reservoir, however it would also make the head end look a bit aesthetically pleasing like the Monster 1100 evo, which I like the look of but don't have the money for a one of those.

Having done a little research on the options if I were to stick to the default options, I could get an OEM replacement or take a upgrade to 16mm with Brembo RCS16, Radial 16x16 or Radial 16x18.

I have seen the graph with the pre-2000's clutches vs the post 2000's clutches with the ratio for Ducati superbikes with 16mm clutch vs the stock 12/13mm, but I am unsure what the different would be like going from a 12/13mm to a 15mm? this calculation doesn't seem to be talked about much.

Am I right in believing that the 2011 Monster 796 and 2014 Panigale 899 both come with a 26mm slave clutch cylinder?

I understand that it will make my clutch feel stiffer than the rather flimsy feel the stock clutch has, but would I be creating a major issue in terms of using the clutch for myself whilst trying to make the bike more aesthetical pleasing?

    Thank you for your help.

  2. the person that answers this and covers/answers all points correctly will get a standing ovation from me. I hope you do get your answers, i think it would have to come from a kindly guru in the trade if at all, possibly like @nelly if he had the time.

  3. Wanted to add an update to this.

Been doing some more research, the 2011 Monster 1100 Evo and the 2015 Panigale 899 share the same 15mm clutch master cylinder.

The Panigale and Monster lines both use a completely different clutch slave.

The Monster 696/796/1100evo all use a clutch slave that is the same fitment and bolt pattern.

The monster 1100 Evo however has the newer pinned clutch pushrod to avoid it rotating. Unsure if this really makes any difference in what I am trying to figure out.

Information online is unclear if the Monster 796 and Monster 1100 Evo share the same bore size in the clutch slave cylinder, the same model Oberon 29mm slave cylinder is compatible with both, but it’s a little unclear if they are both 26mm stock, Ducati seem to be more open about the bore sizes of the brake components but never the Clutches.

Hope someone here may be able to help add some technical information about the bore sizes of the different components, as my understanding is pointing me towards the 15mm master being directly compatible.

    Thank you.
