996 Right Headlight Lens Or Complete Headlight

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by Bumpkin, Jul 8, 2021.

  1. My best mate and touring buddy @Carl Gray was with me in Scotland last week. A stone, allegedly spat off my back wheel (no, I'm not paying... shouldn't have been following so close ), has comprehensively cracked the right/off-side headlight lens on his 996.

He thinks that all 916 > 998 models have the same headlight, we stand to be corrected if this isn't the case.

Ideally, and to save cash, he's thinking that with some heat from a heat gun the lens can be removed and replaced. If anyone has a suitable lens or a headlight unit with a broken left lens that they want to sell then he'd be interested.

Alternatively, and failing the above, if anyone has a complete headlight unit that they want to sell, the ones on ebay are crazy expensive, he could be interested in that instead.

He has joined the forum but is somewhat challenged in the IT department so has asked me to post on his behalf.

  2. I’m fairly confident they’re all the same across the years. Not so sure about just replacing the front glass though.

  3. Thanks Paul for verifying the across the 916-998 range interchangeability for the headlight unit.

I'm not sure if his idea regarding the removal and replacement of the individual lenses is based on reliable information or just an assumption. I have heard of this being done on other bikes and cars.

  4. Hi,
aren't there no lefthand drive headlights available anymore?
Just the EU light are out of stock.

    Regards,
    Marco

  5. I’ve seen the glass replaced before. Yes gentle prying with heat dork. Then refitting with Sikaflex will refix with no issues.

  6. But from where do you get the glas?
You have to buy a new lebd hand light anyways.

  7. From another damaged light unit. Good luck in the search

  8. Hm not esy.

  9. I have some headlight protectors I’ve never fitted… wonder if I should.

  10. Are they legal?

  11. The headlights are all the same but the wiring differs between earlier and later models. I seem to remember earlier ones only ran on one main light lit up at a time, as opposed to both being on with the later models. I doubt that should pose a problem though.

I also seem to remember that the earlier lights only had one sidelight bulb and the latter two. The earlier ones had the second bulb mounting point blanked off.

  12. Just in case no one could take the time to read the link I included, this is the main physical difference,(Euro/UK) and can be altered or fabricated from new :-

  13. Agreed @Chris - I made a "reverse' dip plate from a bit of tin can. Worked a treat.

  16. Usually it should be enough to buy a UK version an put my EU reflector in.

  17. Same here as my 916 originally had a 'left hand drive' headlight, except I used some stainless steel plate rather than the tin can but, either way easy enough to do.

  18. They're NOS from the 90's... and 1999 was 23 years ago... so I guess they are over 18, yeah...
