In a bid to cure the appalling oil leak through the exhaust header on the ol' Darmah I'm gonna bite the bullet and go for new pistons & a rebore. So do we have any recommendations on who would do a good job? I'm based in Wiltshire but tbh I'd rather go nationwide for a quality job.
I have used these guys, http://www.ocservice.co.uk/, who are opposite Moto Rapido near J9 M3. An old fashioned workshop by modern standards but top class workmanship and often used by the classic motorcycle fraternity. Andy
Thanks, I found these guys on a thread after a search on here... plating isn't required for an old crusty bevel and their web site gave no mention of whether they do 'plain' rebore/hones. I'll suspect they do and if they bore to the accuracy plating requires they deffo do good work. Will give 'em a call during the week.
Andy, I can recommend this one Automotive Engineering Services | South Cerney Engineering | England is just north of Swindon. Have been doing bikes and classic car engineering inc crank grinding and balancing, reboring, nikasil plating and much else for decades. They are also good for pistons, rings and bearings. Used them to restore a pair of Alfa 75 V6 heads a few years ago, they manufactured new valve guides from scratch. Also over 40 years ago restoring a crank and cylinders from an RD250.
That's a new one on me. Have also seen these places quoted on other forums etc. Yep, I have used these guys for quite a few things in the past and in fact they did the valve's seats/guides on the Dramah. I believe they are now under new ownership and when I last went in it looked like a lot of the old boys weren't there anymore. I also notice their web site doesn't mention rebores either. Thanks for all the names though guys
Andy, most of the old boys have retired or are no longer with us, that does not mean they have lost the skills as they have had apprentice schemes. Reboring is bread and butter work for them and the website does mention it "....within our extensive machine shop we have facilities for cylinder block reboring and linering, crankshaft regrinding, and cylinder head machining including fitting hardened valve seat inserts along with being white metalling specialists." Unless you had a bad experience with them give them a call.
