Removing Corrosion From Bolts

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by ImAGoose, May 7, 2022.

  1. Looking to clean up some of the frame bolts on my M796, was looking at getting a pot of Deox C, just wanted to check are most of the bolts on the bike stainless steel?

  2. Can't help as my fasteners we're simply zinc coated & every now & then. I'll dremel them clean & rattle-can refresh them.

  3. I don’t know the M796 specifically but “Not unless they were changed by a previous owner” would be the reply for pretty much every Ducati ever. If the have A2 stamped on them, they are stainless.

  4. Do you know what metal the bolts on Ducati’s are usually made of from the factory? The frame ones don’t seem to corrode much.

  5. Mild steel with zinc or cadmium plating.

  6. Varies. The bolts that are really tight (without never seize grease) are cheese.

  7. Scrub them in some white vinegar, they will come up clean and it is cheap. Copper slip when you put them back.

  8. Carbon steel (not mild steel) with zinc (zinc & passivate) plating. Cadmium plating was banned in, I think, the mid to late 90s.
A2(304SS) or A4(316SS) both designate medium-strength stainless bolts/nuts. Beware of the original bolt/nut requirement & spec before replacing with a shiny alternative.
If using any acid to clean (i.e. vinegar) make sure you wash it off thoroughly - with water! Obvs oil (or proper Water Dispersant like WD40) after water wash to de-water. Then wipe with rag before applying the usual grease for refitting...

Yes, I'm being a pedant because bolting is serious and contentious subject.
