1299 Optimised Gearing For The Road.

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by JJ1299SX, May 28, 2022.

  1. Hi all, Been asked 1000x I'm sure but I like to keep things fresh rather than trawling.

I am finding my 1299 a little lumpy down low, hard work between 1st and 2nd it feels a bit between gears around town.

Does anyone know the best gearing setup for the road and where to get the correct kit? ebay comes up with so many different kits ranging from £85 to £300.

I understand altering the gearing will possibly bring the rear wheel in, resulting in a shorter wheelbase which i'm fine with, I assume the speedo will not be knocked out?

One thing I am concerned about is the chain fouling the S.A so please don't recommend gearing that causes this issue, It's not a track bike, It's a road bike.

That in mind, not looking to convert to a 520 kit either, I find the bike fast enough, unsprung weight and all that but in reality on the road I don't feel like it's going to benefit me much.

I'd like the DID ZVM - X 525 chain - So if you could provide me with the correct amount of links for the gearing change.

I wouldn't mind fancy sprockets ie Renthal, Black sprockets are cool also.

If I need a sprocket carrier adaption please advise, this is my first single sided swinger & I'm new to Ducati's but I am fast learning that anything Ducati has the world famous Ducati tax.

Last but not least, should I replace the standard clutch slave with an Oberon unit? not had any issues with my standard unit personally but while it's apart I wonder if it's a worthwhile modification?

Appreciate any replies, seems to be a bit stale over here compared to Aprilia pages, Please show me your kits and give me relevant info.

    Thanks all !

  2. Drop 1 tooth on the front sprocket. No other changes or purchases required. Andy

  3. Buy the 1199R chain and sprocket kit. It’s more expensive than going one down on the front sprocket but it’s the right way to do it.

there is a reason companies sell engine case protection and the risk of a chain snapping and destroying your engine increases by using a smaller front sprocket

  4. Appreciate the input but I have read before that it is not wise due to clearance issues / added stress on the chain, more than happy to go up 2 on the rear and replace the set.

  5. Do you know what gearing the 1199R has off the top of your head?

  6. I went up 2 on the rear when I had the 1299. Didn’t have to change the chain an it made the bike a lot nicer to ride around town and at slow speeds.

I agree with not going down on the front sprocket, to my mind it would add additional torsional stress.

  7. it’s a kit Ducati sell and is what is fitted to the 1199R as standard. Just ask your dealer for it.

  8. sorry, I don’t. If you give your dealer a call and ask them for a a price and spec they will give you the details. My only criticism
Is that it’s not a good chain.

  9. Hi, agree with 749er about the stock chain quality. I went for 15t front, 41t rear which I understand is the R gearing. With my Rexxer remap, this let's me run 20mph in second gear, 30 in 3rd, 40 in 4th without snatching.
I spoke with Terry at B & C Sprockets who was very helpful. The chain I was going to get was cheaper, but his advice was the 1299 with its torque and power needed a better chain. I used a DID ZVMX gold with an extra link (108?) as I wanted to run a 60 section rear tyre. Sorry for blatant advertising, but his advice was spot on, and I rarely have to adjust the chain, so am very happy with the quality. Dave IMG_20220531_223021.jpg IMG_20220531_223053.jpg

  10. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 749 come stock with a 14-tooth front sprocket?

and Shazam probably wrote the stuff on DSC ;)

  13. I can't remember half the shit I wrote anymore.
