Hi all. Was supposed to be touring in France this week, but abandoned it due to poor weather. So have been in UK instead and possibly looking at a day in Stranraer area. So question is any good nice roads, progressive with nice scenery in the area?
Was up there early in the year a few years back, but in car with mountain bike. I seem to remember the road from Castle Douglas to New Galloway and on to Newton Stewart was one I wanted to visit on two wheels but have not been back since. The 100 miles of A75 from Gretna to Stranraer is always busy with a lot of trucks heading to and from Cairnryan port, but wander off the beaten track and you should find something interesting. If you are feeling adventureous There is also a forestry toll road near Newton Stewart about 10 miles of gravel with some nice picnic spots alongside the river. I think it is called the Raiders Road.
i havent ridden around there but i have drove it plenty of times, that would be a nice route. sands of luce has a v,nice camp site and anywhere from there alll the way up to Ayr have good variety of roads. a wee scout around the peninsular at Stranraer will throw up a nice surprise or two in terms of places to visit and eat.
New Galloway, to Newton Stewart to Girvan , then back to Stranraer. Girvan to Stranraer is a coastal scenic route which can have a lot of ferry traffic and is partly covered by average speed cameras (60mph). but its still a great run. The roads in the new Galloway forest are empty of traffic.
The southern most point of Scotland! Forgot what is called now but have a look on the map. It was a beautiful day when I went and you could see the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland. Nice treck, impressive light house complete with an equally impressive big fuck off fog horn * just YouTube’d it. Mull of Galloway. Nice…
