The Ideal (track) Tyre Temperature ?

  1. I have noticed several times recently, an infrared temperature sensor is being used by pit lane Marshalls to check tyre pressures as the riders return to the pits and I’ve just seen FB’s mechanic do the same after FP3. Obviously it’s a lot easier method to using a pressure gauge but where can you look up this sort of data ? Andy

  2. Dunno. But tyre temperature is definitely tied to pressure. In Brno a couple of years back my rear was 19psi out the warmer and 26psi when I came in :astonished: I use quality Capit warmers too. Brno was hot mind. At one point the track temperature reached 59deg C

  3. Tire Temperatures

The rubber stickiness, and therefore the tire grip, increases with the temperature until some optimum value is reached—different for each tire formulation, but usually around 95ºC for street tires. Above its optimum temperature, the tire rubber gets too slippery.

Here’s some track tire temperature readings taken with an infrared non-contact temperature sensor. It’s easy to see it was from a clockwise race course.
