Ducati Superlight Desmodue 900

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Brooksytheplumber, Jul 4, 2022.

  1. Hi, I'm new to the forum.
A friend of mine has a Ducati superlight,
Its not spun a wheel since 2001
Hes a great fella and he's getting on in years and I'd like to get the bike running again for him and see him on it. I think it's a project that he's not got around to yet, his bike has threw a rod and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this repair in the past that's willing to give advice on how to go about repairing it please

  2. Hi
Sounds like a worthy project - well done.

"Thrown a Rod" can mean many things to different people, and is unfortunately a bit of an 'Americanism'.
From the Big or little end wearing out to a Con rod sticking out through a hole in the cases.

What are we looking at here?

The first end of the scale is a simple strip and repair with new bearings and a refresh of anything else that's required.
The other end is a used engine off Ebay to replace it rather than repair it.

  3. Welcome and good luck!

  4. My guess of the thrown rod statement based on the usual issues with this era Duc bottom end is its had the crank oil gallery plug back out and its been ground into alloy shavings and ruined the crankcase bearing the shavings have been smeared into. Easy to spot the evidence as there will be alloy clippings in the oil gallery screen.
