How Can I Tell If I Have High Comp Pistons?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by ck_uk, Jul 22, 2022.

  1. Apparently my recently acquired SS *might* have high compression pistons, but how can I tell for sure without pulling the heads?

  2. Would a compression test work?

assuming base ish levels are to be found. I’d imagine that’s Feasible though ?

Failing that take a look down the spark plug hole either with a torch or a mini camera if you can get hold of one.

Or just take the head off.

  3. Take a plug out and shine a light into the bore & have a look. High comp pistons have a raised crown and standard ones are flat topped. You might need to rotate the engine (by hand) to see the piston crown .

  4. Don’t drop anything in there…. Doh!!! o_O

  5. Or get fingers stuck in the plug hole :joy:

  6. Race people off the traffic lights. If you usually win, you have hi comps.
