1260 Diy Desmo Service

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Bertus58, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. At this moment the odo of my 1260S (2018) reads 29.600km's so Desmo Service is coming..
I'm going to do the Desmo Service myself, is part of the motorcycle fun
Of course I've already watched all threads and Youtube videos;)

Before I start I do have a few questions though:
1- How strict is the 30.000km, can I put a few KM's (~2000) more before the service? Would like to do it during the cold winter days.
2- About valve clearance, are they the same as the 1200DVT (2015)?

  2. I assumed the 1260 was every 18000 miles for the desmo service ?

  3. The bike dash will tell you when the Desmo is due. You will need a dealer or someone with the correct software to turn off the warning afterwards.

  4. I don't do any work on my bikes because I'd screw it up, but if you plan to do work like this I'd suggest getting hold of a workshop manual so you know the correct tolerances, torque settings etc.

    Good luck.

  5. The valve service is meant to be performed at 18,000 miles or 30,000km on the DVT models. There's a slight disparity between these. Going over by a bit should be OK, valve clearances aren't going to change suddenly and there's a margin of safety no doubt built in by the factory. However, best to stick with the manufacturer recommendation IMHO.

There's no workshop manual for the 1260 that I know of, only the one for the 1200DVT. I'm guessing by your question that you already have this. My best guess is that the clearances will be the same.

By coincidence I'm delivering my 1260 Mutley to a local independent (with extensive Ducati experience) for just this job next week. I will try and remember to ask if the clearances are the same for 1200 vs. 1260 and then post back here.

I'm having this work done ahead of a tour next month. As a result my bike will only be on about 17600 miles so the Desmo light won't be on. Hoping to get to 18000 before I depart, I have an OBDStar diagnostic tool so will be able to reset the indicator on the dash myself. This only comes on after the required mileage is reached.

  6. Ish. It's all done in KM, so it's 30000km, which is 18750 miles. I think my light went red within 50 miles of that.

  7. Ah, I suppose that makes sense. Means mine will come on in, or on the way to, Corsica. Will have to tolerate the indicator until I get back to blighty as I'm not talking the diagnostic box of sparks with me.

  8. If you would be kind:cool:
Please ask for valve clearance and belt tension frequency:innocent:
I received info from a US rider, there the valve clearance and some other data is on a frame sticker.
These figures are different from a 1200DVT:neutral:
For the 1200 it would be 0.13-0.18 for the openers and 0.05-0.10 for the closers.
Also the belt tension is a question, it states 90Hz for a new belt on a 1200.

  9. Service indicators/ display etc goes away after a while past the time/ mileage.

  10. That's interesting, thanks for posting the pic of the frame sticker. Basically it looks like they're allowing greater latitude for the 1260. Wouldn't be too bothered if my tech is going by the 1200 figures as they are within the range of those shown.

Will ask what clearances he'll be working to and also the frequency of the belt tension if that's the way he tests it? Not sure if that's the official method? He's factory trained and used to work for a Ducati dealer, has been independent for some time and has a good reputation, so I have faith in what he does.

  11. Official way to test proper adjustment of the belts is with "sound" There are two figures, one for used belts (checking) and the second for newly installed belts (the one I am looking for) Your tech will probably use the Texa TTC https://www.texa.com/products/ttc/

  12. Thank you for the link. Took the plunge and ordered one of those. However, although they do appear to be genuine Ducati workshop manuals, I'm not completely convinced as to their accuracy. The listings for frame numbers don't show the correct prefix for mine and any photos, other than the one on the first page, showing the frame show a white model with a red frame... this is the 1200 colour scheme, not the 1260. The first few pages have many refences to the Enduro only and the technical specifications list the tyres for the Enduro, not the regular, S or PP model. The paint options chart seems to be correct though. Not particularly confidence inspiring... A mish-mash that's not been that well proof read... Maybe this is a draft and not the final published edition? Or more likely it's just sloppiness on the part of Ducati...

  13. I think it was sloppiness and they (Ducati) found it far more easier to use existing pictures of a bike (MTS1200) almost similar to the 1260. But the data seems to be correct :bucktooth::cool:

  14. My multistrada 1260s is coming up for its desmo service, local dealer quoted £900 winter offer plus will collect the bike and deliver I think plus vat.
I can do minor jobs on the bike so I took the side panels off and the tank, the spark plugs been changed don't need to remove the radiator, I've also fitted a k+n air filter now, brake and clutch fluid I did couple of months ago, the bike will go to an independent guy for the engine shims checking and belts changed and any other bits, should be alot cheaper!!

  15. My independent guy was only just a little cheaper than that though no VAT. Having said that he did do a fully comprehensive service including new plugs, air and oil filters, belts, all fluids (oil, coolant, brake and clutch). Dread to think what that that would have cost at a franchised dealer.

  16. I would not attempt this myself and I can wrench. Moreover, In the absence of a service / workshop manual, I'd leave the job to a professional Ducati mechanic. But that's just my opinion for what it's worth.

  17. I'd be interested in the outcome of this as my local non-ducati garage said they couldn't do a 1260 because it needed a Ducati computer to finish off the timing.

  18. Don't be afraid, there is a lot of information on youtube, this forum etc. to perform the job.
    It is not that magical...
The workshop manual is available via internet, see my previous post #13, for about 40 dollar US
