Another Multistrada Tyre Question!

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by JohnoDuc, Jul 30, 2022.

  1. Just about to order a new set of tyres and have decided on the Michelin road 6 but cannot decide if to go for the GT version, both cost the same. I am hoping to be doing a Europe trip at some point this year. Has anyone had any experience with either tyre? If the GT is more durable lasts longer then why would you go for the normal one?

  2. I use the “standard” Rd6, travel Europe as often as SWMBO let’s me. I’m never two up, panniers and occasional topbox. Never once had an issue.
I’m sure someone who goes 2up with luggage etc will give their opinion too.

  3. Just fitted a pair of Road 6s, standard not GT. I think the GT variant is for heavier bikes and standard construction tyres perform better for Multis.

  4. GT has an extra ply, stiffer carcass for heavier bikes. Andy

  5. You don't want/need the GT.

  6. When they say heavier bikes, think ones like the K1600 and Goldwing, it's about longevity when the bike weighs over 300kg.

  7. Plus added sidewall rigitity. Might even be counter productive on an MTS, giving a harsher ride.

  8. Standard road 6’s on order. Thanks for all the info!

  9. Exactly what I was advised. I'm a few hundred miles into the Road 6 and they're like Road 5s only one better. They're mega.

  10. In the last two years I've got through 5 sets of Road 5's, never tried the GT, with each set lasting between 3000 and 3700 miles, thought I'd give the Road 6 a go as they say they'll last a little longer. To make a tyre last longer the compound would need to be changed I'd presume, slightly harder compound maybe? I fit my own tyres and the first thing I noticed was the carcass and the sidewalls are a fair bit stiffer than the Road 5's, this was evident upon fitting. I can almost throw a Road 5 on to the rim, they are so flexible that just a smear of tyre soap and I can get both tyres on without levers, just use my hands and a rubber mallet, if required. The Road 6 took a load more effort, rim protectors and levers were needed.
Bedded them in for 50 miles then rode like normal. The tyres a good but, they don't give the 'feel' of the R5, you don't get the same feedback from the front tyre when it's cranked over. Still great tyres, not a scary moment has been given. I think the rear will last around 3800 (ish) miles, just a couple of rides left in it, the front has worn better and may even do another rear but, I'll be going back to the R5 as, for me, they just inspire more confidence.

  12. Looked into this a couple of months ago; concluded that at the extra £50 or so that R6s would cost over the R5s I went with the latter which have served me well over quite a few years. Will likely need a new set at the end of September though.

  14. I also fit my own tyres but this will be the first time on the Multistrada. How do you balance the rear? The spaces on my balancer are too small to fit the wheel.

I don’t bother balancing the rear, need to get some cones made for my balancer, never been an issue.

  17. I recently put Metzeler M9 RR on my 1260 gt. I used to use road 5's on my previous 1260, but honestly, the m9 rr's are better in almost every way. They turn the bike into a weapon! Strongly suggested if you're looking for something a bit more sporty focused.

Oh, I did 4.5k on them the first week they got fitted, still plenty of life left
