Help With Potential Purchase

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by 900theginge, Aug 4, 2022.

  1. Hi all,
After selling my 750SS a few months ago, I have found a nice looking 900SS for sale on eBay. It looks really tidy, the chap seems really nice and has sent me a few videos of it starting up cold and some close ups of the engine casings and frame.

the negatives are that there is no service history with it so belts etc will need doing.

could anyone please advise and comment on the advert? Is the gold frame the correct colour gold? Anything that stands out as questionable?

    Thanks as always,

    Rob

  2. Side fairing decals don't look like they're OEM ones. Frame looks like it was powder coated at some point as it looks too shiney for the factory gold which was only used late in the carbie MY's or on the factory replacement frames (for cracked originals)

  3. Thanks Macca. He said the frame was sound but you’re right, that might be because it’s been replaced/fixed at some point. Sounds like it’s had a respray too! I was hoping someone might recognise it on here. With no history, it would be a gamble I guess.

  4. Agree with above,
Owner hasn't put much effort into the advert and 4 photos  i always like the ones that let you zoom in for a better look,

  5. Some more stills from the video he sent. Typically it’s about 350 miles away from where I live in Carlisle

  6. Thats better,
Clean and shiny but that frame colour puts me off even if it was a change of frame and thats the colour it came with, looks wet sprayed not powder coated to me but its not me looking to buy it, has it been imported as i think it reads registered board? a shame its not much closer.

  7. Ah good spot, I forgot to ask him if it was an import.

  8. I would say the fairings have been painted because they aren't the correct decals. Frame looks a bit to shiny and goldie too.
If I remember your 750 was like new, will this bike stand up to your expectations?

  9. I shouldn’t have bloody sold it. Although I have an itch for a 900SS but I don’t think this is quite the one. Too many negatives from the frame, the decals, it’s a possible import and has no history.

thank you chaps, as always! The search continues I think….

  10. It looks clean, not original in several ways if that's your bag, and does look like the frame has been painted to me, it looks a little too Yellow.
The matching bright Gold bar ends could be a giveaway in that they were painted at the same time.

The nice Ducati Rubber cable ties all look to have been replaced with a mixture of Natural and Black Zip ties, which suggests it may have been apart.
That may not be a bad thing, but if you are a stickler for originality you may want to consider it as a bit of a 'Tidy-up-er' and consider the price with that in mind. But only if you can put up with the frame colour, otherwise it will all have to come apart.

As has been said, the Seller put very little effort into the advert, the text is rubbish, and the images all distorted, which suggests to me very little Love and care for the bike all round.

I see the above as an opportunity to score another project, but would offer a price accordingly and walk away if the seller won't remove his Rose Coloured specs.
Although I appear to be in the minority in that respect.

  11. What would be your thoughts on price out of interest?

  12. I'd say between 2 and 3 grand. Nearer 2. I agree with what's been said. Horrible non standard frame colour. But at least it's not rusty! As a result I'd go as low as possible on the asking. Everything can be fixed but I bought a worse one 11 years ago, and all I've done is spend money on it, they aren't cheap as I'm sure you'll know. Lack of history doesn't put me off, as I've rebuilt a few engines now and know my way round them.
The exhausts also look a bit crap imo, stick out a bit much at the rear, too long.

    How much they asking?
    Just seen,£3300 way too much

  13. As said already side decals are not oem, but they have been put on the wrong way round. The “900” should be against the leading edge of the panel
Would make me worry what else they have put back incorrectly

  14. Badly taken blurry photos are always a put off, I appreciate not everyone is David Bailey but with any phone less than ten years old they would be better than this! The decals as others have said are not oem and if you look carefully are the same decal both sides rather than being handed so the left ones is the correct orientation but not the right one! Frame as previously discussed looks wrong and no service history at all is a sign that at least the previous owners didn't care enough to keep many records, at over £3k already it's a definite walk away, you are getting closer to the price of a good one for what is really a project bike!

  15. One word.....

    Swerve

  16. Largely in agreement with what has been said so far.
For me, the frame paint colour would take it out of my “watch” list immediately unless it was priced to restore, which it isn’t.
As the owner has had it 15 years and it looks tidy, they are clearly doing something right, so if I could overlook the “Subaru WRX alloys gold” frame (I can’t :joy:) I would ring the guy and ask all the questions that would confirm where he sits on the competent enthusiast to chancing bodger continuum, and go from there.
No SH isn’t necessarily damning - I don’t keep detailed records of the work I have done on my bikes, as I never intend to sell them, and I have a decent memory, so know what is due when, and massively over-service and mollycoddle them anyway.

  17. Well overpriced, but more likely to be a gearing change than a stretched chain I would guess.

  18. Ok, I'm going to be critically constructive, it's got some nice bits on it (non standard) such as the SES rearsets, and nice BOS exhausts. Non original seat. Carbon open clutch cover. Braided lines all round. Tyres Look good

    Things I've spotted
Wheels have been powdercoated in a non standard gold, swingarm has been drilled for bobbins, tank pads squint, there's an oil leak left cylinder, a good few polished bits that weren't originally polished, at the very least it's been stripped a bit as there's loads of tie wraps out of original placing. For the mileage, I wouldn't expect the clocks to be as faded? The rear caliper isn't original. The standard fairing fastner cups are missing. Some of these don't matter as much as others.

I'm highlighting all of this to help you make a decision, or to perhaps set a price via a good old fashioned haggle
