749 Stalling When Clutch Is Pulled In

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Nostromo, May 1, 2021.

  1. Currently in wales with the family, should have some time to tinker in the coming days. 2273EE48-FCEF-4D9D-8C09-BAED84F8199F.jpeg 1577C0C5-C888-413F-A5FD-89753E02CFE1.jpeg

  2. Today I installed my radical tank and 848 fuel pump on the bike.
Cutting out when coming to a stop has gone, but I am now not getting full power and the bike cuts out 20% of the time when you open the throttle initially. From reading other threads it looks like the filter on this 848 pump may be gummed up( plus it has been sitting in my shed for almost two years now. 1A35BFB3-371E-42FF-B17D-32A760436067.jpeg

  3. The frustration continues!
Plugged in my odb cable for jpdiag, no connection(on a new laptop but drivers etc installed) wire test shows the same connection timeout message, so unplugged the cable and thought I should re install the drivers and try again later, turned the bike on after and now getting errors for coils, TPS and thermostat! Fans blaring away as well….

  4. Sounds like you burnt the ECU ground.

  5. I must confess, I briefly had the diag cable power cables on the wrong terminals…. Only briefly though:confounded:

  6. That confirms the blown ground then.

  7. Go straight for a performance ecu?

  9. something rang a bell when you said fans remaining on.. sorry to read.

  10. Me not paying attention… oh well.

At least now the root cause was found, bad fuel pump filter, or pump assembly. Abit frustrating as the dealer I had the bike off said they had checked with another tank/pump. Otherwise I would have tested that first as I had everything in my shed:sob:.

A big thank you to all that offered up they’re knowledge and help, much appreciated and I’m glad to be part of such a great community!

  11. Currently have this exact problem. Bought the Bike in February from a local used dealer.
Rode it home in the wet as I was that keen to get it home. I managed to fry the fuel pump relay in the rain on the ride back, and found that even with the key out the pump was priming. I did also noticed the stalling issue on that initial ride, just as you described only when coming down the gears to junctions and rolling in first with the clutch pulled in.

The dealer replaced the fuel pump wiring loom and the relay and bike has been running perfect except for the stalling issue as mentioned which has continued. Like yourself I've been riding around the problem thinking once winter comes I'm going to strip the bike down and sort out all the problems an 18 year old bike comes with.
However, I went for a ride last night to a local meet up (Squires cafe) and within that 1hr I lost both rear indicator bulbs, engine management light came on, lost my water temp reading from the dash and the fans came on permanently, also had a horrible noise from the fans like maybe someone's previous inability to keep wires tidy had now wedged itself towards a fan blade.
Had some chips, let the bike cool off. Rode the bike home with the fans running permanently and with something rubbing into them.
Bit worried to what might be the cause as the fuel pump wiring has already been replaced.
Guess I might have to start my winter strip down a few months early

  12. If anyone has any images of how this should look, and where the cable should be routed I'd appreciate that. Think this might answer my bulbs blowing and the temp sensor, but unlike to be related to the clutch stalling!

  13. Fans on constantly may indicate fried earth on the ecu, sound like you have some bad wiring, other causes for the cutting out may be clutch switch, sidestand switch.

  14. The coolant temperature sensor wires are white/blue and black/violet which looks like what's in the photos. if the ECU isn't getting the correct value the fuel mixture will be wrong and that could cause stalling.

  16. Spent some time tidying things up after repairing the water temp wiring. Replaced the indicator bulbs, cleaned off any earth's I came across and replaced and old worn harness loom tape.
Bike fired up and has no management light and is displaying the water temperature again, indicators are working fine.
Gonna take it out this afternoon, and I suspect the stalling whilst holding the clutch in will remain.
Either way I'm happy to be able to get some more miles out of it this year.
One thing I have noticed with the bike is it does have a low idle, so my next step will be to adjust that. Hoping to not have to replace the ECU.

(I am aware that the rubber cover is off in the last image, I have installed it now. But would be happy to hear what else maybe missing or is not looking correct. I suspect the regulator/rectifier is aftermarket.)

  17. Hi - I REALLY hope you took the opportunity to move the fuel pump relay to the top of the battery box while you had the opportunity?

  19. I extended the wiring to the Fuel pump relay socket on my 999 right up so it's just inside the upper fairing panel.

I can now change it just by undoing the top two Zeus fasteners, moving the panel back a couple of inches and pulling the relay and socket out through the gap. To change it takes 30 seconds.

It really is worth doing whilst you are in there.
Oh and of course you will always have a spare relay in your pocket whilst out riding of course.

  20. Thanks for the tips. At the moment the fuel relay remains in the stock position. I plan to strip the bike down in the winter and will revisit the wiring loom again.
For now this work seems to have sorted my issues, including the stalling whilst clutching and rolling (for now !).

Thanks again for the input from everyone. IMG_20220417_220603_415.jpg
