While it’s cold and wet I have decided to check the valve clearance on my Multistrada DVT. A few of the shims are out of spec. Is there any tips for replacing them? I currently have the horizontal cylinder in TDC. What’s the best way to keep the vertical valves from dropping into the cylinder?
The alternative to forceps is to turn the V cylinder to TDC when you do that one. Naturally, you’ve already marked your cam pulleys and lay shaft pulley so they can be easily put back in the correct position.
Good point, I have just checked all the clearances and all the openers are within spec. So it looks a lot more straight forward to replace the closers. These engines are quite new to me, am I correct that turning the engine 270 deg from horizontal TDC puts the virtual in TDC? It all looked good just nice for someone to say 100%!
I've done one a while back and had no problems. Can't remember the exact method used but if I managed it, it can't be rocket science
To my thinking most people over complicate cam timing. There are 5 reference points to mark up before removing anything, each of the 4 camshafts and the crankshaft. Mark each one against a point on the engine case or cylinder head and simply make sure that each mark lines up when it's all back together. Whatever gets moved, turned during the job does not matter so long as the 5 marks you made all line up when it's back together.
I need to correct myself there. It’s the closers that are the pain and need the collets removing. I need 7 replacing!
