Hi, I’m currently looking at a TT1/2 replica that has not been registered for road use. The current owner has the registration documents from the donor bike and thinks it is an easy task to register the bike for road use, the only items used from the donor bike are the engine, wheels, suspension, electrics. The bike is basically a track day tool at the moment but if I was to purchase it I would really want to register for road use. The new frame has no chassis number and obviously the tank/seat and fairing are non standard. My question is has anyone managed to register a bike similar to the above recently, I don’t want to buy a bike for trackday/ demo use only… Many thanks for any useful advice…
I would be very interested in how this works out, the TT1/2 in my opinion will make a great though uncomfortable road bike, I’m presuming it’s going to be daytime use only? Don’t know how the dvla will react to not having a frame number but maybe the frame maker could supply you with one that you could stamp on Is the bike based on the carby ss ? have seen them with ‘reversed’ heads Good luck with your quest
As I understand it, sadly it isn’t straightforward in the case you describe. You can’t keep the original reg of the donor bike (different frame spec) and you would struggle to get type approval for a TT1/TT2 special as it would need to meet all of the regs of a new bike.
Hi, Yes I’m looking at a daytime licence… I’ve got to an age now where I could probably get on the bike okay but would need to be surgically prised off it after half an hour BUT I’ve decided if I don’t do it now there’s no chance… The bike is actually a 900 non carby so a long way from “ original” but it looks absolutely fantastic . I was wondering if the frame number from the donor bike could be used ( in my dreams) to register the bike… Cheers Rob
You can simply give it a frame number yourself and stamp it on. DVLA etc don't care what it is as long as it's unique. Your insurance will however probably ask more questions. It's then worth trying to just apply for a frame number change using the donor bike V5/reg, but I'd suggest you register the donor bike in your name first then apply for the frame number change after you get the new V5.
Thanks Jon, that was my concern…. I have tried to contact a guy with a road legal TT on Facebook for some advice but no response….
People have done this in the past, I’m sure. They probably don’t have problems with it. So long as it is never stolen, or in an accident, or stopped roadside by someone who knows how the original should look.
Some years ago I bought a Rob North frame and built a Rocket three The first thing was the Police inspected the parts to ensure nothing was stolen. I then had to show the V5 and receipt for the frame to customs and excise They calculated the value of said parts (it was a very fair negotiation) and I paid tax and VAT I then made up a Frame number and got the bike insured and MOT'd Finally I sent all the Documents to DVLA and was issued with a new V5 and registration for that year. Sadly that was in the 80's when you could visit your local tax man and attend a local DVLA office. I doubt it's that easy now
I would also check with an insurer that they are prepared to insure it for road use and at what cost -just to avoid any unpleasant surprises later.
Thanks very much for everyone’s advice, I think there maybe too many hurdles to make this a practical dream.I’ll just have to keep on the lookout for one that’s already registered….
