Good afternoon folks. Rebuilding my s4 monster engine this afternoon I managed to break one of the oil control piston rings, any ideas where I can get a replacement at a reasonable price, ducati want £££'s for a full set. Cheers
This isn't going to be very helpful but may jog someone else memory There was a chap I think from Greece sold piston rings on e Bay. You could buy single rings from him. Ducati will only supply a full set over £100
i bet you have found these already:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18559770...1o6JR7VVYvEO3fY27CWMNiuOI=|tkp:Bk9SR_Thwd_5YA only approx £55 cheaper than new.
For reference, I think this is the Greek fella mentioned in this thread. I bought rings from him for a 98cc Ducati Cadet - without any issues. I believe these rings are for 900ss at huge saving. Caber claim to be OEM manufacturers, but I have no idea whether they are or not. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/17419010...aqDpPmKS4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
That looks like the guy, I contacted a bit ago through ebay but they were only doing 86mm dia rings at the time not 92mm - good to know. Cheers Gaz
Try googling "piston ring suppliers" it comes up with quite a few UK companies. I can see no reason why if you give them the bore dia, bore material ie c/iron, nicasil etc and the ring type and thickness why you couldn't get a replacement. Even send off the broken ring as a sample with all the details. Can't be that difficult.
Agree Hugh, I got a set made for a Pantah in the States about 10 years ago. Not cheap maybe, but they're out there.
From memory the top ring is "L" shaped. I can't remember the thicknesses, I might have them written down somewhere but think the oil control (bottom) is 3mm from a post on DUCATI.MS. Will have a look when I get home, it would be nice to nail this one once and for all. This site possibly gives sizes - need to check. https://www.sd-tec.de/en/ducati-pis...er-851-907-paso-to-1998/item-1-412805080.html Cheers Gaz
I had some battles with piston rings on my Monster, problem being the JE pistons had chrome rings (at least the oil ring) and it buggered the Nikasil plating on the bores. In the end I got in touch with Performance Unlimited; https://www.performanceunlimited.co.uk/ who, from the measurements of what I was after supplied a complete set (though rings are available individually) of CP (Carrillo) rings for both pistons for less than £70 and so far they have been faultless. As I was using aftermarket pistons, OEM Ducati wouldn't fit anyway so not an option but I bought some OEM rings for the 916 many years ago and I seem to remember them costing a couple of hundred per piston.
