Servicing Original Petcocks

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by MonzaMan, Apr 14, 2023.

  1. Hi There:

In the picture below, my original fuel petcocks from my gas tanks. As you can see they are in pretty good condition. I could replace them outright but I would prefer to disassemble, clean, and return them to service.

Does anyone know if the old plastic strainers can be removed and replaced? Or perhaps just completely and permanently remove them and attach brass mesh bag strainers such as those found on British bikes (other picture)?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

    Best,

    David

  2. can't comment on above petcocks, but the earlier Cagiva type, same as some fitted to Kawasaki bikes etc had threaded thimble filters looking very similar to the type in the top picture, and could be obtained separately but this may have changed. Have you tried unscrewing yet?

  3. Thank you. Not yet. Was hoping to get some intel before I start warming things up and twisting. They look kinda fragile.

  4. I usually found they were easier than they looked. It's maybe because the nylon part can't corrode and anything that builds up doesn't seem to bind them up when it comes to the thread. Don't have to tell you this i'm sure, but grip it as close to the junction as possible.

  5. The filters are likely to be the least of your worries. Inside they have a rubber sealing ring. On old ones this gets eaten by ethanol and the taps then either leak, or deliver fuel at a miniscule flow.

I did try laser cutting new seals from ethanol proof sheet, but it didn't work. Think you would need to make a punch and die.

You can buy similar taps on the internet.
Prices vary widely. Last out I bought 6 from Italy as they were cheap and the postage wasn't. Between me and my mates bikes I have now used them all.

  6. Thanks everyone!

Now I have the knowledge to get started.

If things don't work out, I'll just snag some cheapos from sleazebay and call it a day.

Now back to the grind until the week-end arrives!

  7. I used to make my own, punching out holes as you mentioned. I can't remember what material I used but they lasted as well as the originals.
