Dunlop Roadsmart 4. Problem And Disappointment

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by tom.gorka, May 7, 2023.

  1. Hello . One day I made up my mind - changing tires in my Multistrada V4 S.. from factory Pirelli to something made more for the road (ehhh..). The choice fell on the Dunlop RoadSmart 4. I went to the Ducati dealer where they fitted new tires for me. First impression hmm ok .. the motorcycle has become much more "light" turns like crazy. All I have to do is think and he lies down .. But my infatuation ended very quickly. enough to exceed 100 km/h. The bike is terribly nervous. Hyperactive. in addition, when moving right left, you feel like it's shaking like jelly. It feels like you're driving with half air in your tires. the same effect occurs e.g. when driving in a curve. The moment of straightening the motorcycle causes it to swing. You feel terribly insecure, as if you're about to fall over. Driving on motorways at speeds above 150 km/h is a real horror. The motorcycle floats, snakes .. I was traveling with trunks, but without this problem also occurs. I went back to the dealer with a complaint. He put me on a set of wheels from a demo motorcycle (Scorpions) and everything back to as it was before. Sure and stable. So it's not a bike problem, it's a tire problem. On Dunlops it's so hard that I move my head right and left and in a fraction of a second the motorcycle makes a right-left movement like jelly ... every gust of wind makes you have to hold on and keep 100% attention .. it's very tiring. I found some guys who just changed tires to Dunlops and wrote that they have the same as me. So did the guy from Michelin Road 6. Have any of you had anything similar? I need to buy some other tires. I don't want to go back to Pirelli Scorpions. Maybe metzeler roadtec 01 se? I'm just afraid it might be the same...

  2. They’re a very personal choice tyres everyone has their favourite, Dunlop ain’t mine since a bad experience with them back in the 1990’s. Although for balance Dunlop Mutants are getting good comments on a KTM page I frequent. For longevity I use Michelin Road5’s for improved tipping in and grip Pirelli, if you do a forum search I’m sure you’ll find other recommendations.

  3. Fitted Dunlop TTs to my V4s multi and it transformed the steering from the slow and lethargic Scorp 2 (even when new) to fast agile /lithe . No high speed stability issues with these on mine in a variety of suspension modes solo, 2 up & with panniers. It could just need the tyres/wheels refitted.

  4. It is very strange that tires have such an effect. I thought something was wrong with the motorcycle, but since after replacing the whole wheels with new ones with Pirelli Scorpions Trail II everything is back to normal, something is wrong with the tires ... I think ...

It is very hard to explain but it is like driving with no air pressure on wheels . When you are riging straight it looks normal but with every single movment of handlebar you are feeling you back is shaking right and left one time .

  5. Have the wheels been balanced? Metzeler work well on MTS

  6. I had some Mezteler M9RRs fitted to my V4S last week. Ive not had a chance to really try them out yet, just the ride home.

  7. Same with my thoughts on the CRA4 , cant get on with them , did 2 ride outs then went back to the TA3 , great set.
Sat on my spare wheels awaiting removal to the shelf of shame , along with the posted Roadsmart 4 which only managed 3 ride outs ( oh and the mutants which were good but wear way to fast for my style)

  8. I agree that tyres are a personal choice and what works for one person may not work for another even on the same bike. I find interesting to hear that some find the turning a bit sluggish with the OEM Scorpion Trail 2's, as I haven't experienced this at all. I have been really impressed with these tyres that I'm on my second set after getting 7500 miles from the first set. That's from riding in all conditions and certainly not easy riding. I had Metzler Roadtec 01's on my previous GS and they are tyres, again in all conditions, but I was only getting 5K miles from a rear & about 6 from the front and as I do a lot miles it was proofing costly. But as we all say, each to their own. Good luck with your choice, Tom.

  9. I’m 4000km into a set of Dunlop Mutants on my MultiV4S and I can’t praise them highly enough :upyeah:. From the very first ride after fitting they are so confidence inspiring regardless of whether it’s wet or dry.

Wear wise I’d say I’m not even 1/2 way through the tread yet so plenty more life left in them.

Stability wise, they’ve been tested up to 200kmh with full luggage and no wobbles or anything, the bike was/is as steady as a rock.

  10. Scorp2 will probably only feel sluggish after you’ve tried it on sportier/faster turning rubber. I recently went from barely worn scorps (came with the spare wheels I acquired ) and new Sportsmart TTs (on the original now powdered coated wheels) and the steering difference between the two is sublime in favour or the Dunlop Sportsmart. Prior to that I had thought the scorp was a decent tyre and that slowish steering compared to other bikes with stilts for suspension was down to 19 vs 17 “ front wheels (S1000XR as an example) . Turns out you can get a lot closer to making it feel / steer like an overgrown supermoto by changing just the tyres. So now I’d categorise the scorp2 in the white goods tyre pile, as it does what’s asked of it but doesn’t excel at any performance capacity.

  11. It is amazing just how much the wrong tyre choice can effect handling. Years ago I had a KTM 990 SMT. When I bought it, it had some awful Metzeler track tyres fitted which I knew would be lethal in the cold and wet and only made sense when red hot so I changed them immediately for Z8's which were the sports touring tyre of the day. The bike then developed terrible head shaking. Above 60 mph if I took my hands off the bars they would shake so violently I had to grab them again to prevent a terminal tank-slapper. I tried everything. Overhauled and adjusted the suspension, replaced the steering head bearings, changed the screen, removed the hand guards, played with tyre pressures. Nothing helped. Someone suggested it could be the tyres. I was sceptical as I couldn't believe simple tyre choice could create such a violent reaction. But I changed to Roadsmarts and the bike was instantly stable and calm.

I ran the Dunlops for a while and I liked them but found them slow to warm up and the profile too conservative to really exploit the SMT's exceptionally nimble handling, so eventually my default tyre became Conti Sport Attacks. Unlike Adventure bikes, the SMT had a 17" front wheel so true sports tyres were an option.

So I would suggest the OP gives Conti Road Attack 4's a go. Contis are legendary for stability and the RA4's have one of the sportier profiles among sports-touring tyres which will make the most of the V4's handling. I would think they'd suit the Multi very well. They're also extremely good in the wet, they build and retain heat well, provide masses of feedback and as they're heat-treated they don't need scrubbing in.

  12. Got a set with 2 rides , taking them off so will be up for grabs if anyone wants them , did not suit me to be honest .

  13. I've changed Dunlops to Metzeler Roadtec 01se. Everything is back to normal. So, they are not tires for Multistrada .. comparing to Metzeler Dunlop are much more pointed and less oval in they shape. I don't know where all the oohs and aahs come from

  14. Tyres are a very personal choice and some will suit some bikes and some riders but others will have a different opinion

RIDE magazine have a sports touring tyre test this month and rated the Metzeler Road tec SE1 best.

Just spent a week in France and read one of their magazines testing the same tyres. The rated the Dunlop Roadsmart 4 equal top with Pirelli Angel GT2. Different opinions of different riders..
