First Time Ducati Owner - Struggling To Start Bike

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by WismanRafique, Jul 5, 2023.

  1. We recently purchased a 796 20th anniversary monster with my wife (for my wife)

It sounded a little lumpy and struggled to start the day we picked it up, but having never ridden a ducati before we initially put it down to it maybe being a ducati thing! This thing has also been stood for last 2 years and not ridden, kept covered outside on a trickle charge. According to the service book it was last serviced in 2016!

Get it home and give it a basic seeing to:

    1) Brand new battery
    2) Oil Change
    3) Brand new spark plugs
    4) Repair/replace cracked vacuum hoses
    5) Air filter

All the basic diagnosing and stuff that usually helps in resolving the issues. After we did all this, the bike started on the button first time, sounded so much healthier and rode 10x better.

ALAS, come to ride it work this morning and NOW THE BIKE WONT START!
We can hear the fuel pump drawing in, the lights are good, kill switch is off, it's not in gear and the kick stand is up. It tries to start but just wont catch!

Are we missing something? Is there a more serious issue at hand? Any ideas?

  2. Welcome to the forum. I’m sure someone more technical will be along soon. I don’t know what all the basic diagnosing is so you may have done this.
First thing I’d do is take the plugs out, connect them up and have them touching the casings. Turn the engine over and check you are getting a spark.

  3. If you don’t have the option to plug the bike into a diagnostic computer then start with the basics.
Pull the plugs, do you have a spark?
When you crank it with the plugs installed and then pull them are they wet? ie is fuel getting to them?

When you say you “repair/replaced cracked vacuum hoses” which hoses are you actuall referring to? A photo would help.

  4. You say that you bought a new battery. Did you put it on charge before fitting it?
It is advised that you charge it before fitting.
Do you have anything on the bike (alarm etc) that may be draining the battery

  5. The MAS airflow sensor vacuum lines. Pictures aren't uploading for some reason here, but one wasn't even connected at all due to having a crack down the end!

  6. One thing that really needs doing is a valve-belts change, since it's at least 2016 since last changed!! This, however, is nothing to do with your starting issues.

  7. Thanks for the info about the MAP sensor lines.

Photos need to be <2Mb so perhaps they’re too large to upload, most taken on phones these days are and need to be resized before upload.

As the bike was running then isn’t and as you don’t have access to diagnostics (FYI there’s a free option from JPDiag) you need to start with the basics, spark? fuel?
