  1. hi chaps, was out on the bike today and did 80 miles round the cotswolds all fine, on the way home goin though cheltenham town the bike cut out at a set of lights and wouldnt start again all most like the battery was dead flat, i left it for about 5 mins and tried again, it started first flick like the battery had been on charge for a week!! the only thing i did different was turn the head light off when i tried again!! does that make any sense to anyone??

  2. The headlight could be taking just enough current to stop it turning over so easily. I have a 748R engine in a 748S chassis and when it gets hot it can be difficult to turn over. It could simply be a case of headlight on and the bikes compression holding it back from turning over as it's trying to fire on the compression stroke. I have had it on other 748's too.

Probably a good idea to test the battery and the charging rate and also check the plug behind the battery box where it connects to the alternator wiring. The big injectors don't help sometimes as they can cause a bit of flooding if fuel sits on the butterfly, a well known problem with 748R stuttering.

  3. battery earths corroded.........

  4. thanks mate il have a look.

  5. and the main engine earth that goes from the battery area to the chassis not just the terminals on the battery

  6. Check the live to the starter, too. Mine was a bit fried. As the temperature goes up, so does the resistance of the bad connections, and with the starter sitting right above the exhaust pipe from the front cylinder, it does get pretty hot. Will dig out a pick to show how bad the starter connection and shroud can get.

Here goes - this is what the main live at the starter looked like on my 998 (I assume the starter is in same position on 748?)
