Mt10sp. 2022 And Later

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by J biker, Aug 21, 2023.

  1. As per title, anyone running one of the later versions or had one for a while? The early version always tempted me, but the mpg did not.
Late versions supposed to be more reasonable with fuel, partially down to a one tooth bigger back sprocket. No doubt a bigger screen would help with improved aero as well..
Liking the spec and the fully adjustable Ohlins, with preset values or manual settings. Along with adjustable wheelie control, engine braking etc.

Love the capabilities of my GS. Miss a few wheelies here and there and a bit less weight.
Thinking about a test ride on the SP.
I dont take passengers anymore but do like suspension that does not knock me out of the seat!

  2. The crossplane engine sounds gob smacklingly brilliant.

  3. Yep. Loved the sound since the 2012 R1….

  4. Can’t speak about the MT10 but I ran a R1 all last year and that engine is just awesome, it really is. Mine wasn’t much worse than any other litre bike tbh… not sure why the mt10 would be different

  5. IIRC, the cross plane engine in the MT10 sp is not a full fat R1M engine, only 165 ish horse power. Looked at the MT10 as a replacement track bike but I found the chassis too small for me. Andy

  6. correct, it’s not, it’s actually the engine they used in the R1S that the states had as a base model, which uses steel conrods.

however it’s even stronger torque wise that the r1, which had great drive from 5k revs but not ripping your arms off, the mt10 as I understand it is already wheelying by that point!

  7. I have a 2018 Mt10. Owned it for a little over 3 years and still pleased with it. Sometimes I think of selling and returning back to a big cc v-twin but then that 1 more ride and think that would be a stupid idea.

Ridden as a road bike with a bit of hooning fuel consumption is 40>42mpg. Fuel light comes on at the 110>120 miles mark.

Although I enjoy it as a wheelie and skid bike my supermoto is better for those sort of things

  8. Supernaked and MPG (any performance bike) shouldnt really be in the same sentance or paragraph. :)

  9. Take one for a test ride. I recently took the standard MT 10 for a test ride - they wheeled it outside and almost sat me on it. The throttle response seemed like going back in time a few years, when all bikes seemed to be trying to perfect their electronic fuelling and throttle responses.

My 1290 is spot on. The stock MT 10 on power Mode A seemed like bikes of a few years ago. I had the original MT 10 SP in 2018 I think it was.

I would be tempted by one of these not another MT 10 .....

  10. Yes and no. A bit like buying a naked and fitting a bigger screen. Often questioned!
People do question it, but I admit it is something I will do.
But, why? For me I have some injuries and cant sustain repeated days out at speed without some pressure taken off.
Also, sometimes we dont want full weight ADV, neither do we want dropped bars….maybe not even 200bhp!
The sweet spot? 130-160 bhp, a bit of a screen and flat bars. Difficult to find these days.
After a long (very long!) list of various bikes, I am in the market for a do it all (semi) naked. I want 120ish miles to a fill and some wind blast protection. Not a big ask.
Often I am puzzled at the choices offered by manufacturers. So many nearly bikes. So many bloated ADV ( currently riding a GS…the best of the bloaterso_O)
We get bikes with no screen, no comfort, no fuel guage… 80 miles to a fill…limited use really!
So maybe miles per tank, rather than mpg is important.

  11. Throttle map two is softer by all accounts. But 2022 had different fuelling, now much smoother and well sorted.

1290, I had a mk1 GT. Terrible comfort, many false neutrals (at speed) and suspension that never felt matched to the road conditions. Not saying never…just unlikely for me.
Also ran an S1r. Superb handling, quick, comfy, but a buzz box.

  12. The Yamaha Tracer 9 seems like the bike you’re describing. Or maybe the recently released KTM 890 SMT

The more mature riders on the KTM 790/890 FB page opt for a medium to large screen and a top box. Much to the consternation of the younger posters.

From my 790 I get 175 to a tank, I’ll guess the 890 isn’t much less and has a screen and all day comfort. A little like the now discontinued Hyperstrada.
