D30 Ghost Armour

  1. Anyone using this type of armour its the thin and flexi type normally orange in colour, thinking of getting a back protector.

  2. Yup, been using it for years, moulds to your shape when it heats up, I use the armour in all my kit, the back protector is thick but light, hope I never have to test it though.

  3. The new ghost armour is only 6mm thick usually for jeans, they also make a level 2 which is 11mm, you can literally fold it in half. I still use the more traditional moulded D30 which is in all my jackets, once warmed up you don’t know it’s there…

  4. I bought my Rokkertech jeans before the D3O ghost armour came out and believed the hype from Motolegends buying into knees and hips to replace the earlier D3O inserts. I didn't get on with it as it tended to all but fall out of the knee pockets when you stood up or walked. Reverted to the original. My girlfriend prefers it though and we replaced the armour in her jeans with the ghost inserts stitching up the pockets slightly to hold it in place.

As above, the original D3O stuff is comfortable, especially once it warms up. My Klim Marrakesh jacket came with older D3O whilst my girlfriend's, bought a couple of years later, came fitted with the ghost stuff. She's happy with the new, I'm perfectly OK with the older armour. I'm not convinced that the thinner material offers significantly more protection. Plus being flat, albeit thinner, vs the thicker moulded stuff I'm not that convinced on ghost being that much more comfortable either.

A couple of years ago I came across a bag of brand new D3O in a local charity shop selling for £5. Two back protectors, knee, shoulder and elbows too. Fitted that to older kit I had lying around.

  5. I’ve got the Ghost armour in my latest Rokker jeans, and you don’t know it’s there. It’s very thin, and although they say it’s as safe as the traditional armour, I hope I’ll never find out.

  6. Thank for the comments, think i'll pop to Sports bike shop and have a look at what they have. The new thinner Ghost armour looks good on the face of it but being so thin I cant help thinking will it offer as much protection as traditional armour...

  7. Lightweight denim jeans with armour are very appealing during summer rides when the heat makes you sweat like a pig.
They also make sense if you are calling in to a cafe or pub but from a pure safety angle they are a poor substitute for leather and traditional armour. The denim may help with abrasion but in a true nasty off proper armoured jeans are the best protection.

  8. Totally agree, I have AAA A-stars one piece leathers with traditional armour but I did buy some kevlar jeans and a textile jacket this year. Sometimes im only riding 30 mins to Hunstanton then spending a few hours there so in the summer heat its not enjoyable in full leathers, same with local bike nights. Now its cooled down im back wearing the one piece, its always going to be a trade off.

  9. I’ve got the ghost armour in my single layer Rokker jeans and it’s very comfortable, I understood it had the same level of protection as the standard D30 (this was much thicker).

I enquired to see if I could fit it in my Rukka trousers but I was told it’s not possible.

  10. I didn’t get on with Ghost protectors because they flopped around my knees, elbows, etc., which I found uncomfortable. Many like Ghost armour, but I find protectors comfier when they wrap nicely around the joint. However, comfort is personal.

Also, I’ve more confidence in armour that wraps around the joint, as it’s less likely to budge out of place in a crash. YMMV.
