Ebay: Something not right!

1. I've been looking for a spare tank for the SS for some time now, but seems most are either 'immaculate' and bods want £hundreds or I assume they are snapped up by the DD boys in case of accidents!

However, I spent the last week watching one that was local (St Helens), the seller had replied to a question saying "No buy it now price as letting auction run to end" and bidding was only at £50...... I waited and waited (as you do) until the last hour or so of the auction, then tried to check how bidding was going .... and all I could get was a message saying 'invalid item or item no longer available' .... then with less than 2 minutes left, the item listing reactivated .... but every time I tried to place a bid, the 'invalid' message came up again....

End result : final price stayed at £50 and I obviously wasn't the buyer!

Now either the seller was running a scam/had sold outside of ebay (despite promising to let the auction run) or someone had used software that prevented others from bidding and has effectively fleeced the seller of a better final price. Either way, it's not good ....

Was anyone else watching this tank, or do they know the seller? He also had a tank for an 851 up for auction so may well be on this forum somewhere. .......

2. Something was definitely amiss with e-bay last night. I was watching a pair of DP mirrors and some carbon goodies from the same seller.

Checked the bidding about an hour before just to see how things were and all was well. I bid on the mirrors in my usual last minute fashion only to find that bid wasn't accepted, checked my 'watch' list and the other carbon goodies had disappeared off the face of the earth with the message "your items are not available at this time, check back later". WTF

I must say I didn't consider it a scam at the time, more an e-bay cock up, but now you come to mention it, I'm not sure. All my other watched items with buy it now status were fine and a bike that was running in auction also ran to the end.

It did have a feel of software override now I think about it. Hmmmm. Barstewards

3. I was watching that (silver/grey tank that had been repaired underneath) was surprised to see it had only the single bid on it. Don't know if it was worth much more than £50 though

4. You can't cancel an auction in its final 12 hours, it has to run. Someone could be gaming eBay by having a friend bid a high price to put off others, then cancelling their bid in the final minutes. That's happened to me in the past.

5. I was watching a totally non related item (a tool for work) that finished on Saturday and same as above was waiting til the last minute but then when i went to place a bid it just said "invalid. Error code 10.12"
It sold for £82 when every other one of the same item (its a paslode 2nd fix nail gun) is selling for at least twice this??
Didn't think much of it til now.
I could get into any other item on my watched list except this one. I was going to stick a bid in for 150 which isn't good for the seller.

6. I was browsing for cars for my mates mrs last night and it kept saying "unavailable".

Thinks its just a case of site maintenance im affraid.

7. Here's an official list of ebay error codes: Errors by Number - eBay Shopping API

10.12
Error
Invalid item ID.
Invalid or non-existent item ID.
RequestError

8. Why would an item be invalid?

9. I had it last night .., also I went to relist one of my items and it said the same for one of my items .
Sounds like a site problem :(
i also lost out on an item was gutted :(

10. use snipping software or just stick in a decent large bid earlier on rather than wait until the last minute

11. ...and that's when they get mates to put in incremental bogus bids until they 'outbid' your maximum, then withdraw the last bid leaving you as the winning bidder but paying your maximum despite not actually bidding against anyone ...... !

If I receive an 'outbid' notice, then find out I am the lead bidder again, I always withdraw mine!
