Embarrassingly Simple And Irritating Issue

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by godzilla, Dec 27, 2023.

  1. dear all, trying to do my first few very simple fixes/mods on my new-to-me V2 and already encountered a maddening couple of stuck 3mm hex bolts on my evotech tail I cant budge at all. I think I may have started to strip one of the bolts and have tried 1. heat gun 2. penetrating oil 3. go to 1 - a few times but with no luck at all. any suggestions on what might work?

they are the only two bolts preventing me from splitting the tail tidy and replacing the stock indicators on there.

incidentally, for anyone who has done that before, the ones im hoping to use just have a standard 8mm fixing, are there any rubber boots to use to get them to seat into the indicator housing neatly?

didnt realise I need a 12mm spine bit too for the bar ends - on order and fingers crossed those will loosen!

  2. excellent, thanks very much chris!

  3. I would just drill the head off. As soon as the tension is gone the rest of the bolt will just wind out by hand. 5mm drill bit and it's off in 1 minute.

  4. I’ve seen somewhere that using a rubber band in the hole to aid grip might work?

  5. Cool the tail tidy in the fridge and heat up the hex socket with a hot air gun. Should just make the fit, that bit tighter and might need to encourage the hex socket to fit into the cap head screw. Andy

  6. Those screws look a bit like torx not hex

  7. thanks all, will try some of these and report back! they are definitely hex, not Torx, have looked under magnification, they're just a bit. worn now.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  8. Valve grinding paste in the hex head and the allen key should grip as well as it ever will after that it is a 5mm drill

  9. Yep these are shit fixings and have seized solid on mine too. Crappy crappy - not a Ducati issue that one (for once)

  10. Couple of things that have worked for me.

Put a latex glove over the end of the hex driver

Hammer in the nearest torx driver

  11. tried the Torx, heating and cooling. might just wait till the lock garage is open and have them apply their expertise before I mess it up more. did you manage to get them out in the end? any alternative fixings?

  12. Hammering in he next size up TORX (star drive) is probably easiest. Will knacker the fixing for good though really. E.g hammer tool in, undo and replace

  13. SpeedOut screw extractors work well on those little flat head bolts, just drill the correct size pilot hole into the centre before using the tool, it helps the ‘drill’ part of the extractor get deeper in.

What penetrating oil did you use?

Try and get hold of some Transyl by Owatrol, most motor factors stock it, it’s far and away the best stuff I’ve ever used and I’m forever having to deal with seized bits & pieces on bikes

  14. I used something called "RP-90 Penetrating oil with molybdenum disulphide'...! not had much success with it the few times one used it.
