Getting The Fuel Pump Out

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by Desmophil, Mar 2, 2024.

  1. I am finally getting to restore my SP4.

I am going to change all the tank's inner hoses and give it a clean.
I was trying to remove the fuel pump and I cannot figure for the life of me how.
The pump is within a rubber mount and I don't seem to be able to extract the pump from the back and I don't seem to be able to remove it with the rubber from the metal flange pulling forward.

Looking on the manual and there does not seem to be an indication of how to proceed.

Anybody has done this operation before and could share some light how to progress it?

    Thank you in advance.

  2. There’s a plastic housing that clips into the tank mount. There’s 2 plastic flats opposite each other, that need depressing to release the pump. It comes away with the rubber sleeve.

  3. Thanks Nelly - the pump is out though there wasn't a plastic clip - only some ledges on the rubber that I had to push in to go past the flange.

  4. When you're done, can you do mine? Are you going to do a restoration thread?

  5. I am not sure that I can be diligent enough to do one of those.
If it interests people why not?

Big up to @Bridgland who has been an inspiration and I am really going to be following his footsteps (and many of the contacts that he kindly shared and documented).

  6. Hey Phil. Very kind of you and hope you get the bike the way you wanted it to be.

  7. No doubt we will meet when it is operational as I am not far from you.

But how fast I will be able to progress remains to be seen. I am happy that I am returning to working with the bike after 3 years of zero progress. Crazy how it goes. Focus was on the business. Now, I am feeling that spannering a bit at the weekend is nice and relaxing break from work, so as long as I keep this going, it should be coming together in a few months. Maybe I won't make it in time for the summer season, but I am in no rush, any step forward is progress and the process of rebuilding is enjoyable in itself.

    - You be glad to know that your swingarm post has prompted me to repair my current swingarm (phoned the same people) -though still need to source a clean one for the sps- and will look to repair the pivot bracket of the tank which are a bit ovalised.
    - I am seriously thinking about giving a go to replating my own bolts.
    - I have used Hi-spec coatings for underside parts of my Audi and I am deciding to cerakote the engine too.
    - Please keep me posted if you redo some exhaust brackets, flexihoses, etc. I am trying to keep the sp4 as original as possible, but some bits might not be looking best on a nuts & bolts rebuild. I have not ventured on 3D printing yet and I don't see myself doing it soon.

Your experiences are definitely an inspiration and a considerable help. Thank you for sharing.

  8. @Desmophil, I have buckets of all of the chemicals still in my shed for plating and happy to let you have them with the variable power supply, if you want to give it a go. I also have some original exhaust brackets for the SP4/SP5 that I am not using and don't plan on using.
